I'm new a tarot. I even have a tarot book and many online sources. but for some odd reason i do not understand what this card is advising me to do. I asked "should i go ask a former employer for a job?" I did a four card spread: 1:situation, 2:obstacles present, 3: action that should be taken, 4: outcome. The third card, the action card, was reversed knight of swords. the most common interpation---i found--- is action needs to be taken but is delayed or blocked for some reason.  Huh  I'm lost.....Does that mean i should do something, should i wait or does it mean i can't take action. If this helps, here is the spread:

1: 2 of pentacles, 2: 7 of pentacles--reversed, 3: Knight of Swords--reversed, 4: Knight of Wands

Any help or suggestions (or a better book to learn from) is greatly appreciated!

btw-I have a difficult set of tarot cards to read from--Tarot of Reflections--they are beautiful and i was drawn to them but not very helpful for beginners (i know need a ryder-wait deck :-/)

If you're having trouble with cards, why not resort to reason?  What's the worst that can happen if you ask for a job?  What are the pros and cons of the job itself?  How badly do you need it?

I'm scared of rejection or seeming desperate (even though i'm in dire straights). But fear is not reason. The economy is so bad and the metal manufacturing industry has been hit so hard. i got laid off from a different metal fabrication job that was doing excellent in previous quarters before this quarter. The job i had before they were struggling when i left and they are connected with another failing industry--construction. I'm desperate for a job--too many bills to pay.

Lots of people are in a bad position - I shouldn't think it would reflect on you personally.  The economy isn't in a good state.  Making use of former acquaintances is an excellent strategy.  You aren't guaranteed success, but I can't think of what you'll lose in a substantive sense by asking.  Even if your former employer can't offer you a job, they might be able to point you somewhere specifically.

The tarot may not be the best thing to use right now. People who use the tarot to answer questions for them tend to use it as a crutch. Rather than answer their own questions they turn to something else to do it for them.
Apply for the job regardless of what the tarot says, it isn't infallable. It's meant to be a guide not the end-all answer. Apply for any job. In this day and age it doesn't pay to be picky. Gods knows it's more important to survive than to work in the perfect job. I've been there.

1: 2 of pentacles, 2: 7 of pentacles--reversed, 3: Knight of Swords--reversed, 4: Knight of Wands

Quick and dirty interpretation - the situation can't remain in balance and you do need to take an action.  The timing is bad (7P reversed) because things are not progressing and growing in your industry at the moment.  You need to take a decisive action (talking to your old boss) while bearing in mind that that is not the direct solution (the knight being reversed/lack of success in that endeavor/he won't likely have a job to give you).  The Knight of Wands as an outcome would indicate that, while your old boss cannot help directly he can point you in the best direction for you to move - he might have heard of somewhere else that is hiring, he might have connections that involve you having to move, he might know of a job in a different industry he thinks you could do/should look at.

If you left on bad terms the knight reversed could mean you have to humble yourself, or put up with hearing all your flaws before getting help, or give an apology.  Difficult to do, especially when you really need help, but you asked the cards for advice and this is what they gave you.

I hope this helps you decide what to do.  It seems to be basically saying yes, ask, but be prepared for this to be a step rather than a solution.

I asked "should i go ask a former employer for a job?"
Your problem in interpretation may come from the phrasing of your question.  It's vague and passive, and in my own experience, when I have an ill-phrased/defined question, the results are all over the place (or just plain snarky/sarcastic).

If you want to use the tarot, I recommend rephrasing your question.  Your results will become much clearer if you do that.  And refrain from using "should I...?"  It's also one of my personal pet peeves ("I dunno, should you?").  You can ask for advice, you can ask what the outcome would be if you chose option A versus option B, you can ask for a lot of things.  But asking if you "should" do something will result in readings that are difficult to interpret, if you can use them at all.

My recommendation:  Go to your former employer and ask for assistance in finding a job.  In a situation such as this, action is preferable to inaction.

I think you just answered your own question.
