Wicca is a nature-oriented (but not nature-worshipping) Pagan religion which originated in the mid-20th century, incorporating elements of traditional witchcraft (folk magic) and the teachings of Gerald Gardner. In its original form, which is still practiced, Wicca is an oathbound fertility religion which reveres both male and female deities and whose mysteries (truths that can only be communicated by direct experience) are transmitted by initiation. Over time numerous variations on the original form, including individual or "solitary" practice, have evolved.
