Many years ago, I was searching for new books to expand my
horizons in the Craft. Not happy with just what my teachers gave
me, I sought for expanded knowledge. I happened upon a book that
I immediately bought -- Practical Candleburning Rituals. I was
both pleased and puzzled by it -- pleased that someone was
talking about something important to me and puzzled by the
Christian 'spells', which given how most of my Christian friends
feel about spellcraft seemed inappropriate. I read the book,
yawned through the rituals, and tucked it aside.
Now Ray Buckland has come out with Advanced Candle Magick. After
reading it, my first thought was that Mr. Buckland should become
a craft writer instead of a Craft writer. As in Buckland's Complete
Book of Witchcraft, Mr. Buckland's directions for
creating items are much more interesting than the rituals
themselves.
The rituals aside, I find I have trouble with Mr. Buckland's
style and several announcements. This book talks down to the
reader, a fact that I tend to resent. That coupled with his
habit of stating things as the way it has to be would have
automatically put this book on my list of books headed for the
used book store. However the practical details of candlemaking
rescues it from that fate.
