Many consider Starhawk's 1979 book, The Spiral Dance, to be one of the seminal works on Neo-Paganism and Feminist Wicca. It takes a very hands-on approach, intermixing background explanation and instructions with practical exercises and rituals. The 10th Anniversary Edition includes a chapter by chapter commentary on the original text, documenting author's 1989 thoughts. Given that I personally feel that the way to address inbalance is to restore balance -- and not to move to the opposite form of inbalance -- I still have almost as many reservations about this book today as I did when first read in it the early 80s. However, it is an excellent source of exercises, magick, and ritual even if one does not always agree with the politics. The Spiral Dance is probably a book that belongs on every Pagan's bookshelf.

Since this review was written, a new 20th Anniversary Edition has been published.
