The South Carolina representative who acted like an ass stole the show for me. His Wikipedia page has been locked, he's #1 on Twitter and his web page is down. Serves him right.

If some Democratic rep had dared to shout "Liar" during one of Bush II's speeches, the Republican talking heads would have been calling him a "traitor."  Somehow I don't think Republicans doing it to a Democratic President will qualify as "treason" in their minds.  Roll Eyes

Probably not, but this guy is definitely taking a hit from his own party and some pundits. That was a really stupidly rude thing to do. Ditto the morons wearing the homemade signs. I realize some of these people are on the same level as the rabble they rouse, but I honestly think most Americans expect adult behavior during a presidential speech being held in Congress. This was stupid.

Especially when he seemed to be calling "liar" on a simple issue of fact -- whenever or not illegal aliens are excluded in the bill. Something easy to fact check and requiring little interpretation.

Congress ranks very low in public opinion for a reason.

I think that Obama does want to exclude illegal aliens from the subsidized coverage (if the illegal aliens can afford to pay for regular coverage I dont' think anybody would raise a stink).

I suspect that the bill says nothing about illegal aliens specifically.

But, I suspect that the rules needed to keep illegal aliens from getting such subsidized / govt coverage will raise a ruckus from the far right and from the left.

Overall the speech was very good and the choice of phrases on the health care seemed to be Very carefully choosen. He didn't give any ammo to the GOP in that regard.

I still have doubts wether he can achieve much of what he wants.

I also note, from a couple of blog posts, that a bunch of the stuff would not kick in until after he is re-elected for 2012-2016.  That's almost a neccesity to make significant changes. Yet ...

It does. I saw the pertinent piece highlighted this morning.

That's a plus.  I'm not sure a lack of mentioning would imply coverage for illegal aliens, but a definate statement that it does not is better.

Yeah. AFAIK, it's mentioned specifically in several places. Pretty much says "any individual not here lawfully" which takes care of that.

Rep Lamar Smith (Texas 2nd) contends in an op-ed that there is no enforcement mechanism to insure that illegal aliens can't get health care.

Seesh. There's no enforcement mechanism to ensure that lots of illegal things don't happen. For example, there are laws against all sorts of illegal practices, but no enforcement mechanism to prevent businesses or government agencies from doing them anyway -- just (sometimes) penalties if they get caught.

Just to point out illegal immigrants tend to avoid government officials on general principle because they know if they get caught they get deported.

I somehow doubt that a family of five illegal migrant farm workers are going to walk into whatever office it would be you would go for this stuff in broad daylight and fill out the necessary paperwork.

Is there a problem with having to have a health card?  It's as normal here as having a driver's license or age of majority card.  More normal, in fact, since people who don't drive and people under 19 still use the health system.  The newer ones also serve as picture i.d. when needed.
