That does raise a point. Why isn't there more insurance fraud by using fake health insurance cards?

I'm not quite sure how that would work, unless you were only visiting a doctor/facility once.  As soon as they turn in the claim the fake number would get rejected, and that's the end of that.

Stolen cards, now, that might be a different issue.  At least the numbers would be real, so I'd think they'd have a better chance of getting through.

I was thinking of  faked duplicates of real cards.  Same real name and numbers.

Hmm, it's been awhile since I've had to establish a new relationship with a doctor. Maybe just checking the person against the driver's license is sufficient.

This might be a non-issue then.

Actually, I figure there will always be fraud, but in this case, there should be no more fraud than there already is.  In which case, this is a non-issue that is being freaked over.

Moi?

Gods no. I meant the people who are doing so much of the screaming about illegal immigrants and the health care reform act.

<snippage>

Also, will all doctors who accept insurance have to accept all insurance?  Right now some doctors don't accept say Humana, but do accept Kaiser.

Based on what I'm learning in my classes (right now I'm in the middle of intro to health care management), I'll take a stab at answering this, with the caveat that I could be in error. However...

*Most* doctors are contracted to a specific HMO or PPO or other managed care organization, which in turn is connected to specific insurance(s). That's why Dr. Joe takes Kaiser, Dr. Moe takes Humana, Dr. Larry takes Aurora, and Dr. Curly takes Mercy--but none of them takes the other three. If the dr happens to be in private practice, he has more leeway in deciding who to contract with, w/r/t non-federal insurance, so Dr. Shemp might accept Kaiser and Assurant, but nothing else. Also, private practice medical providers may *accept* any insurance, but they're only *contracted* to one or two, so the benefits won't be the same for everyone. Accepting it means they get the out-of-network payment, contracting means they get the in-network one.

I'm not hearing much about changes in how that part of the system will work.

(We just finished the segment of class dealing with financing health care and managing budgets, so this is pretty fresh in my head. Thanks for giving me an opening to spout a little bit and get used to explaining--it's what I'll probably end up doing with this degree, and I can surely use the practice!).

I'm familiar with the present system. it's the new one I'm wondering about.

I know that nothing in the bills is final. Not sure if any changes in the present system are needed though to ensure affordable health care.
