Isn't there some verse in the Bible that says you suffer some kind of divine retribution if you alter the words in the book in question?

They aren't claiming they are altering anything, they are 'translating it correctly'.

I wonder how people who believe in literal interpretation are going to take it when things like the Sermon on the Mount and the Book of Acts get thrown on the chopping block.

I don't know, but fundies tend to pick and choose which parts of the Bible to follow so they probably wouldn't care if there is such a verse.

Translating it so that it better fits their agenda, perhaps.

Ah, but this doesn't count as altering. It's a difference in translation.

If translating it from Webster's English to Rush Limbaugh's English counts as a difference in translation then ok, but that seems like hair-splitting you need a microscope to spot Wink

looks like a version that I will NOT be acquiring.  I'm wondering how they will translate that bit about it being easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven.  Off to see if they've translated that yet.  In the article they translated pharasees as intellectuals.

Is there a pass or path somewhere called the Needle?

Yep. A gate in Jerusalem, I believe. I'm sure Peter can give you more information, but from what I remember, a camel had to have his packs removed in order to get through it or it was so narrow a camel could barely squeeze through. I forget the specifics,
