New layer of fraud in pet food scandal

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/4787219.html

Quote
WASHINGTON — The tainted Chinese ingredients that got incorporated into U.S. pet foods and later made their way into chicken and pig feed were not wheat gluten and rice protein as advertised but were ordinary — albeit seriously contaminated — wheat flour, government investigators said Tuesday.

Moreover, Food and Drug Administration officials said, some of that contaminated flour, mislabeled as gluten, was mixed into fish food in Canada and exported to the United States, where it was fed to fish raised for human consumption.

So does mine.  Anyone who still believes that industries can be trusted to regulate themselves after this is living another world.

Ugh!  This just makes me sick.  Reading some of the responses to that article were a real eye opener too.  You know, a friend of mine and I used to joke about buying land and being subsistance farmers.  I never thought it would work because I'm not near as socialist as he is.  But the idea is getting more appealing every day.

Ugh. More contamination?

Guen, that substiance farm of yours? Let me bring my fish and cats. I'll raise fish in a nice, big, eco-friendly pond. Might even get some water power from a little waterfall. We'll have well-raised fish for pet food and for you seafood-eaters. (I don't eat seafood.)

I'll bring the sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, cow and perhaps a horse!  I'll also bring my knowledge on growing gardens organically, composting and a dog or two for watch dog duty.  Wink Grin

Ugh, I forgot my knowledge of how to can food and my sewing and knitting skills.  I can provide clothes (as long as they're not TOO fancy and, unfortunately, no pants as of yet) and plenty of sweaters, scarves, hats and socks so we'll not be cold.  Cheesy Wink

I can spin! And weave, and knit...  but I spin faster than I do either of those things.  I'll provide the yarn!

So, we're founding The Cauldron Commune, then?

I'm in.  Not really sure what my practical skill is, besides candle-making, but we'll need worker bees and organizers and I'm good at both.

If I bring my husband, we'll have a kick-ass carpenter, too.  That would probably be useful on a commune.

I don't know about "commuine" so much as "community".  Cheesy

Candles are good...we need candles for ritual, flame keeping, light, whatever. The carpenter would be good too...he can help keep us and the animals sheltered.  However, please don't think that just because I've animals and can knit that I don't know how to swing a hammer when and where needed or do anything else that needs doin.  Grin

Organizing is definitely a practical skill!  How many offices do you know of that run well when the Head Administrative Assistant is out for more than a few days!

Hahaha!  We could be a shoe stealing tie dyed pirate commune!  Muwahahahaha!!

You know, the funny thing is that if I won the lottery, my biggest dream is to build a somewhat subsistant community that doubles as a Renaissance faire and Bed and Breakfast.  It's really corny, but it's my dream.

To everybody else who piped in with goods and services.  Rock on!!!!  Sounds like we have a rockin' community already!  I sew.  I garden.  I cook.  I am good at raising animals.  And I have a lazy horse that could be used for anything non heavy labor-like.  And since I've just gone through a month long trial of no electricity in my bathroom, I can rough it with candle light like a Trooper!!!

Hey did you all see the Good Morning America piece this morning about the Green Family??
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3159955&page=1
The web blog is really "eh", but the story this morning was interesting.  He was there talking about it himself.
