It's probably in one of the old message threads,

Looking for a couple of really good sites that debunk the god Samhain story. An academic site would be preferable over a recon site.

From a quick look, I'm not seeing any academic sites.

I love religioustolerance.org - The Myth of Samhain

It even mentions an essay by WJ Bethancourt who is a f.o.a.f. of mine Smiley

Usually when someone wants to do serious research, wikipedia just isn't that reliable. About the best it can offer is if someone has posted their sources.

true, but since all i wanted to know was what she was talking about (i literally had no clue when she started explaining), it was good enough for me. well, that and the Supernatural episode synopsis that i found  Grin i love her to death but she believes in odd things...

Thanks.

Wikipedia would be right out. The Rabbi wouldn't even bother clicking thru to see the article.

You're better off looking for books and articles.  Folklorist Jack Santino is the major scholar who has done work on Hallowe'en and its origins.  Kevin Danaher's book The Year in Ireland also has a great deal of info on Samhain.

It's not a site. But I always tell the idjiots who throw this around to read "Stations of the Sun"by Ronald Hutton, then talk to me. I also tell them that the VERY Christian Nation has a month called Samhain and that must mean that they worship this demon if their information is correct. That shuts them up.

I've spent the last week or so leaving comments on sites that propgate this myth. Fruitless? Yeah. Fun. Oh yeah!

'Course, in Ireland they pronounce it "Sow-wen" and not "Sam Hane". I always find that mispronunciation amusing. I can almost see the Horned God walking around at Halloween with a "Sam Hain" name-tag on to be funny.

Sorry to intrude here, but I think that is a great idea for a Halloween costume that very few would get the humor in.
