« Topic Start: May 14, 2007, 11:19:49 am »

On May 14, 2007, we made two MAJOR changes that affect how you reply to messages on this board. (Our rules, FAQs, and guides will be updated to reflect this change over the next few days.)

  • First, we have eliminated the "REPLY" button that was available in the right button bar at the top and bottom button bar when you view a series of messages.

  • Second, we have renamed the "Quote" button that appears in the top right corner of messages your member group has permission to reply to with a button named "Reply/Quote" -- it make it clear that this is how you reply to a message. (If you do not see a "Reply/Quote" button, then your member group does not have permission to post in that board -- probably because you are not a Full Member.)

Pressing the Quote/Reply button will put the text of the message in the reply editing area (or in Quick Reply if you have activated that feature from your profile) surrounded by special Quote BBCode. You may eliminate any of the message text you do not need. You can even eliminate ALL of the quoted text, but you MUST leave the opening and closing special Quote BBCode in the message (and the closing Quote BBCode should be on a separate line from the special opening Quote BBCode if you choose to eliminate all quoted text].

On most modern browsers, you can now highlight the text you want to quote in the original message and press the Reply/Quote icon next to the "Reply/Quote" text in the button and only the text you highlighted will appear in the quote in your reply. This will usually not work if you click on the "Reply/Quote" text instead of the icon. You may need to clear your browser cache before this will work for you as the old quoting script (without this feature) may still be in your browser cache.

WHY WAS THIS CHANGE MADE?

As everyone reading this should know, our rules require members to use the "quote" button in a message when replying to that message as that button is the only way to put special BBCode in the reply that identifies the message being replied to and even provides a link back to that message. Unfortunately, many members did not see why they should have to do this, so we have modified the SMF software to make it harder to avoid obeying our rule. You can still avoid quoting by turning on Quick Reply and typing there without first pressing the Reply/Quote button in a message in the thread, but except in very rare cases (e.g. a general "Thanks for all the replies" message), doing so is a violation of forum rules.

Or just plain old hit reply by rote.  SO you have at least somewhat idiot proofed it for me, so I can quit getting warnings..

By the way, I think I love you, are you available?   Grin

It's still possible to reply without quoting, but we have made it a lot harder to do so without intending to. I just hope it doesn't confuse too many newcomers, but my guess is that it will not confuse them as much as Beehive did. LOL.

Doesn't that depend on whether or not you pay the applicable taxes? Wink

Does he paint interiors? Tongue

Reminds me of a (rare) joke from my high school government teacher, while preparing his materials for class:

"I noticed in the men's room someone wrote 'Mrs. Harden is a whore' on the wall.  It made me very upset.  She never brought any money home."

We were so stunned... Cheesy

**laughs**

You never EVER turn that man loose with a paint can. I made that mistake in one closet, he went in unsupervised and with a nearly full can. When he emerged with an almost empty can, I knew we had a problem on our hands.

He's now allowed to paint only when his supply is strictly rationed.

But the closet walls were well-covered. Cool
