I once had visions of a novella-length series of poems about a sort of steampunk, sort of urban fantasy, sort of gothy horror world. Mostly it was an exercise in capturing mood in poetry, since I'm not as skilled in it as prose. Here're the first two bits. Smiley

I sing my body awake
Under the cool anbaric light
The powered-streetlamps, smashed and bare,
Magic on the fritz
Dancing amongst pebbles and twigs
That line the still-warm cement
Like good little soldiers; leftover remnants
From a game of children, hours before
I stub my toe on the largest stone, and laugh;
A gift from Faerie, as my mother would say.

The woods are dangerous at night
Yet how can they be worse than the city
That breathes like an old dragon
Labored and dirty
Overstretched, overworked,
Overcompensating
Body weak and failing and close to the veil
But deadly, and poisonous too.
