http://blogs.ajc.com/bob-barr-blog/2010/02/17/pagan-worship-at-air-force-academy/ This really got under my skin. I commented on page 3, under my own name. I was proud of myself--didn't call him an @$$hat even once!

I see Barr is getting torn apart over it, too. Just as he did over the Fort Hood stuff years ago.

Well, you know, I feel like he should be. If he attacks what he doesn't understand, he should be brought to task for not understanding.

I like how other Libertarians are telling him to take his religious right stuff back to the Republican party.

This is what happens every time Barr sees a religious issue. The man if fine in a lot of ways, but show him an alternative religion and he dives over a cliff.

Seriously! I think the whole "Lemmings for Jesus" philosophy sort of misses the point. There are a lot of really good people in my family who are Christians, and people like Barr make them look bad by association.

I wonder what his real issue is? He's too smart to not realize that his comments make him look like an idiot -- sometimes even to people who might otherwise agree with his position on non-Christians in the military.

I'm not sure what it is. I sometimes think it's just a real blindspot with him. No idea why.

I think he's just pot-stirring.  He's using a definition of "pagan" that, while he may have believed it was accurate back when the Ft Hood thing came up (his overall track record does fit better with classing us as godless hedonists, than with thinking we're Satan-worhipping baby-eaters), I'm quite sure he's been corrected on it many, many times since (not counting the several dozen-plus times in the comments to that post).  My guess is, he applied that definition here because he knows perfectly well that it stirs Pagandom up like a nest of hornets and causes them to post hundreds of comments to his blog.  Controversy sells.

I object! I'm not a godless hedonist-I have several Gods, thank you very much!  Grin

I heard from Tech Sgt. Longcrier today, and here's what he has to say about the current status of the circle:

"We're still going back and forth with the Base right now on a few issues regarding the Circle. They want us to move to a different locaiton that's more secure, safe, and accessible; but we don't and don't plan on moving. So we're trying to figure out how to make the current site work with all the rules that need to be followed.

Thanks for the support! I'll post the news (good and/or bad) as it happens."

Thought you guys would appreciate the update.

Awesome. My ex was an army ranger, and had a couple other pagans in the group. His commanding officers actually let them go out on Sundays when they weren't on "missions" and worship. It wasn't without a bit of flac. "Go out in the woods and prance around naked or whatever it is you freaks do." But he allowed it, which was more than a lot of pagans in the army got.
