You would think with all the food contamination recently from peanut butter to pet food, common since would prevail.

Don't you know that Common Sense is the most uncommon part of human thought? Grin

I wonder why were even getting seafood from China in the first place. Have he already over fished American waters? Oh yeah, Bush doesn't care about that either.

Have we over fished our waters? the answer is yes, a fair number of years ago. In fact much of the worlds oceans are showing the effects of over fishing.

My understanding goes something like this. Their oversight of production is less well done, ecen more dependent on the individual producer, but the pusnidhments are more extreme, and the safety rules that the products are suppsosed to meet and set at a higher bar for use in china.

I've decided to start this thread so there's one place to put stuff relating to the human food supply issues...basically this is aimed at stuff coming in from China right now, but it can be used for other food supply issues as well.

Toothpaste recall in the news this morning:

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=3276328
http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/toothpaste.html
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19186920/

The GMA article is regarding Colgate counterfits from South Africa, but there's also a recall on toothpaste from China as well. Most of the Chinese brands I never see in my grocery store, however, I haven't purchased regular grocery store toothpaste in a couple of years and even then I was pretty brand specific, so it's possible I just never noticed it.

What I find interesting is this line regarding the chemical diethylene glycol:

Earlier this month, China’s main food safety regulator said low levels of the chemical have been deemed safe for consumption.

Seriously?Huh?? Anti-freeze is safe for consumption?Huh I don't care how low the levels are, it's not right to put into our bodies anymore than plastic and fertilizer are! In fact, I'd be willing to say that I think anti-freeze is worse!

And as LyricFox posted earlier, China is now turning some of our own exports back to us. Now if we're sending food over with ants in it, then I'd say they have a legitimate worry about the ants and the ecosystem. And we need to get our act together and not give them ANY fuel for this kind of arguement what so ever. However, it doesn't seem that we're trying to poison their country, so I don't see how their claim is rising them above the damage they've done to themselves.

I love how the article on the colgate fakes tells you what is printed on the box - like I still have the box to the toothpaste on my bathroom counter!

So when do we, ie the FDA, get serious about Chinese imports? Do we first have to kill, or how about the effects that could apear 5-10 or 20 years down the line?

Is it only the current administration or is it the whole food retail industry that keeps the FDA impotent?

Ash,

I suspect something of both. The current administration has certainly emasculated the agencies responsible for regulating stuff, but the food industry gives them pots of money for reelections.

So, it's a vicious cycle, I'm afraid. Sad

Food Imports Don't Get Enough Oversight by U.S., Lawmakers Say

The FDA inspects less than 1 percent of imported food and takes samples of only a fraction of those products, said Representative Bart Stupak, a Michigan Democrat and chairman of a House panel holding a food-safety hearing today in Washington. The FDA plans to close seven of 13 labs that inspect food as well as other imports, posing new dangers, he said.
