Title: The Mist-Filled Path: Celtic Wisdom for Exiles, Wanderers, and Seekers
Author(s): M.A. Frank MacEowen
Publisher: New World Library
Publication Date: April 9, 2002
ISBN: 1577312112
ISBN-13: 978-1577312116
Current Price and More Info from Amazon

Description:
Amazon.com Review: In this book, MacEowen, a teacher of the spiritual traditions of Scotland and Ireland, issues a call to readers longing to live a more authentic life to wake up from "the land of sleepwalkers." "Too many of us squander our lives," he writes, "filling our minds with a crazed habitual raciness that is hard to throw off." MacEowen’s purpose is to show us how to break free of our unconscious habits to place our awareness where it matters, living from the perspective of our inner senses and informed by our souls. The "Mist" he speaks of is a metaphor for spirituality used by Celtic peoples. Drawing on his own personal experiences and myths and poems of the Celts and Druids, MacEowen introduces readers conditioned by modern Western society to a world of mystery and meaning that is ours to enter into at any time, were we only to become more aware of it.

Throughout the book, he also shares various exercises to help us further that awareness, and in the process he makes a compelling argument that the "good life" that all of us yearn for can only be found when we live each day with a sense of "wonderment and wakeful purpose" that is in tune with our divine birthright. With The Mist-Filled Path, MacEowen joins writers such as John O’Donahue (Anam Cara) and Caitlin Mathews (The Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom) in introducing readers to the ancient spiritual traditions of "the misty green isles" of Ireland and Scotland that gave meaning to their inhabitants for many centuries, and which still hold value for us here in the 21st century.

It's been a while since I've read this book, but I remember being distinctly unimpressed; I believe I described it as wishy-washy Celtic spirituality that couldn't decide whether it was pagan or Christian or something else entirely. I've since gotten rid of my copy, though, so I can't really attest to any historical veracity or the usefulness of the exercises.

I read this last summer and was definitely not impressed. To me it read more like an autobiography, and not a great one. Once I get some time, I'll try and come back with parts that really hit me as just wrong. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone on a Celtic path, since there really wasn't much Celtic stuff in it... Mostly the author's UPG.

Ditto.  It's been too long for me to be able to remember exactly why I was so unimpressed.

However, I do still have my copy.  It's on my shelf of "junk Celtic spirituality" books that I keep for those times when I need to rebut a claim about The Great Irish Potato Goddess, or such.   Wink

You have a shelf full of those types of books?  Either you have MUCH more shelf space than I do or have a higher tolerance for that trash and the newbies and/or fluffs that believe in them Shocked

Related to the starting of this thread- could you start a thread in the subforum for requesting book/media threads? That way we can get info without starting and closing lots of threads?

That's a very good idea and it's now on my list of things to do. I'll try to get to it tomorrow.

Well, yeah.  Probably all of the above.   Wink

I only really have HALF a shelf of junk Celtic books -- the more common ones.  And I definitely have a higher tolerance than you do for...well, pretty much everything, I think.   Cheesy

Actually, the truth is that I'm very snarky.  I just don't have the patience to type most of my snark out and post it.  I usually just fume.  It amuses my family.   Wink

Well, I am new to this forum but not new to looking towards the things in life that pull and direct me.  At almost 35 I don't want to waste my time or money on junk books.  I am interested on any book you as a group have found helpful in finding your own path.  Thanks for all the feed back on this book.

I have this book and the sequel to it, "Spiral of Memory & Belonging" read the first chapter or so, but haven't gotten to it yet. I got it because a online druid group I was connected with was drawing on him as a source. It seemed like it might have some interesting perspectives, kinda general "Celtic spirituality" meets neo-shamanism. Will post more when I get to reading it.

I'm still searching for my spiritual abode so to speak, so at this point in the journey, in my mind there is no junk book.  Maybe once I find what I'm looking for and am comfortable in it, I can look back and say that this book or that didn't help me much, or was full of fluff or whatever.  For me, right now, I read everything I can get my hands on- some of the books have been better than others but so far I haven't read one I can say was a waste of time or anything.  Every book has had something useful in it that I can file away for later, for better or for worse.  I do like to read others' opinions on books, and if a lot of people are saying a particular book is junk, then I definitely keep that in mind and maybe read others in the same category first.  One of the many reasons this site has been so useful!  The book mentioned below looks interesting, I hadn't seen it before.

Just a quick note, Gwenhwyfar--please don't forget to quote the post you're replying to, even if it's just the first post in the thread.  This is required by our rules, as it really helps the rest of us follow the conversation.  Thanks!

Just to clarify, when I referred to "junk" books, I was talking about books that include seriously incorrect historical information.  IOW, they got the actual facts wrong.  For example, the claim that the ancient Irish Celts worshipped the Great Potato Goddess, when potatoes were not known in Ireland at the time.  That kind of junk.   Smiley
