I know I'm not the only one who has written some magnum opus. I also know that I'm probably not the only one who can't come up with a title for said magnum opus. For those who finally got past this particular muse blocker, how the hell did you get there?

A LOT of beating my head into the wall.

I've got one that's almost finished that I'm still calling Ghost - and it's TOTALLY an inappropriate title for the novel.  But .... I can't come up with something better.

I'm still hoping for inspiration.  And reading closely, looking for phrases or concepts that epitomize the novel.

You, and me both.

My working title is "Psycho Chick Killed Some People." I don't think there are any publishers that would take that seriously if it crossed their desks.

Well, I have one vampire book that right now has the title "Blood Ties."  The problem is that I think someone (I want to say Tanya Huff) already used it.  Even though the title is appropriate (as it's about a little family of vampires), I wouldn't want my work to be confused with someone else's.

I totally understand.

I want a kind of play on words sort of thing: my main character is a medium, so I was thinking about using that word in the title. However, since the other main characters are vampires, the only thing I could come up with was, "Medium Moroi," and since most people don't know that a moroi is the child of a [/i]strigoi[/i], I don't think it's a wise title.

Try something like 'The Ties Of Blood'-word play usually works for me.

I started book one of my series in 2004 and just came up with a series title and titles for each opus within the last few months - five and a half years.  Like Shad says - lots of head-banging.  And some help from a few readers, mostly in the poo-pooing department.

Except that for people like me, the title Ties of Blood makes one think of neckties...of blood. For the fashionably gory vampire.   Cool

Uh oh Mel. Blood Ties is apparently the title of a television series based on Tanya Huff's Vicki Nelson series, of which Blood Lines is the third.

Eh, close enough.  I still would feel like my novels might be confused with the series.

Any decent publisher would make the same commentary about the title.

To be fair, a lot of agents/publishers often end up at least suggesting alternate titles anyway - so getting too wedded to one isn't a good idea. Cheesy

But it still helps to have something punchy enough to make the agent/publisher LOOK!
