"Vampire of Venice" Unmasked: Plague Victim & Witch?

A female "vampire" unearthed in a mass grave near Venice, Italy, may have been accused of wearing another evil hat: a witch's.

The 16th-century woman was discovered among medieval plague victims in 2006. Her jaw had been forced open by a brick—an exorcism technique used on suspected vampires in Europe at the time.

Intriguing.  I had not previously run into references of people blaming plague on vampires, but it certainly makes sense.  I wonder if there was any regional variation in the prevalence of the belief.

Three things from which never to be moved: one's Oaths, one's Gods, and the Truth. The three highest causes of the true human are: Truth, Honor, and Duty. Three candles that illuminate every darkness: Truth, Nature, and Knowledge.

What fascinates me is that this seems strange for Italy.  There is some folklore regarding vampires as spreaders of plague, but those are more typical to Eastern Europe.  IIRC, there wasn't much vampire lore that came from Western Europe (there was a 'vampire scare' in New England during the 18th and 19th Centuries but that was a rather isolated incident) which adds on to how intriguing it is that this story came from Italy.
