I admit that the idea for this thread came because, well, the Heathens and Celts were doing it.  But then I started thinking that an exhaustive list of resources (both online and off) for cooking may be a good idea so I'm starting up this brainstorming thread.

So far I have broken down into two categories:

Recipes -- Not only ones for someone who never even boiled water to those who have been cooking (either professionally or not) for decades.

and

Cooking Techniques -- Everything from cooking methods (baking, frying, broiling, etc) to knife cuts.  Cooking safety is included in this as well.  I was also thinking of adding something on which herb and spices go nicely with which food/together, but maybe this could be broadened into a third category about ingredients.

The only other thing I can think of at the moment is that non-online resources should be relatively cheap.  Is there anything else that should be added?

Not sure where something like this would go and I'm heading in to fix dinner, but...making stocks. Chicken, beef, veggie, veal....you get the picture. And freezing them for future use.

Making them could go under either one but I'm leaning more in the direction of recipes, personally.  As for freezing, maybe methods to store food can be a category of it's own?  Besides freezing food, we can also have stuff on canning.

Recipes sounds good to me, too.

I think freezing, canning, drying and/or preserving if there's enough interest

I think that under the recipes section, you could make a special section about cheap and tasty recipes.  That's a thread that seems to come up repeatedly here, and it would be nice to have them all in one spot.

<grin> Yep, this was one of the SIGs I was thinking it might be useful for (but also thinking of how much of a major project it could be, so one where "variations on the idea" might apply).

I'll dump a pile of links on you along about, probably, Sunday or Monday - time's a bit tight right now.

At the moment, I was thinking about organizing it like so:

Recipes
[/b]

Recipes for Beginners

Budget Recipes

General Recipes
The Cauldron Cookbook

Techniques[/b]

Cooking Methods

Knife Techniques

Herb and Spice Guide

Food Preservation

Freezing

Canning

Drying

Other

This may not be where you are going, but what about food magic recepies/techniques?

Also consider:  baking techniques, seasonal buying, slow-cooking techniques, and perhaps a glossary of terminology?

I'm not sure about this idea as this SIG is mostly about the mundane aspects of cooking.  Maybe we should put it to a vote?

Those, however, are a definate possibility Cheesy

We might want some type of recipe converters.  Since we have so many international folks here, measurements and temps are not going to match.

Oh good one.  I think that one would go under the "Other" heading.

Well, If you want any help with any of this, just let me know. I'm not working any more, so I have plenty of time. I have lots of recipies and I don't mind doing research or anything like that.

To tell the truth, this will probably be more like a collection of links and book suggestions than multiple pages of recipes and detailed how-to.

Playing off of what Mel says in the message below, I think your volunteer ideas would probably be a better fit for the Cauldron Cookbook than for the project Mel is putting together.
