Egyptian Hieroglyphs For Everyone: An Introduction to the Writing of Ancient Egypt by Joseph and Lenore Scott, copyright 1968.

Another book is mentioned in the copyright page- Egyptian Grammar by Sir Alan Gardiner. Sounds fun

Has an alphabet section, section on bi-laterals, determinatives, how to write it, as good of pronunciation as the scholars have managed, a small vocabulary, section on sentence construction (with textual examples), and some interesting historical tidbits. It is definitely a beginners book (doesn't even hit 100 pages) but its very informative. I saw it in my public library's language section and thought of you guys Hope I'm not overstepping my bounds.

P.S.- while seeing if this had been done before, I came across a name change thread by Nehet, I believe, asking about the Tree glyph? In the vocab section it mentions the word shen as the word for tree. Hieroglyphs are fairly simple- three of them: a fishy looking thing (looks like a Jesus fish standing on its tail); under that is a horizontal squiggle, and the third one at the far right looks like a rounded off spearhead (don't you just love my wonderful descriptions XD). Figured I'd mention that ^_^

nice enough to look it up for me and confirm that Nehet was one word for "tree".  I seems like it frequently refers to a sycamore tree, specifically.  I saw it in M. Isadora Forrest's book, "Offering to Isis".  She uses the word "Nuhet" to mean Sycamore.  Vowels, of course, are subject to debate. 

I think "Shen" might be a more general word for tree, which was what I was looking for to start out with.  But at this point I've really grown to like my handle and I don't want to confuse people by changing it
