France and Italy have very specific standards as to what certain foods can contain, and they're policed by their individual producer's groups with the blessing of the government. I feel like that would help ease the problem here in the US as well.

I've heard of this in the past- esp. with fish and honey. I think they need to do something about it. Annoys me when I try to tell people that things of this nature go on, and they point at the label and say "Nuh-uh!" like I'm smoking something. Obviously a decent amount of fraud is going on. Too bad it's taken this long to do something about it.

Self-policing does not often work in the US. Only the threat of a government inspection at any time has much effect. Even that does not have much effect if they know there are only a handful of inspectors for the whole US. Sad
