What is being proposed is not another Yucca mountain-style set of tunnels in an even more remote location, but hundreds of boreholes that could be spread nationwide, where waste would be sealed several kilometres down in impermeable rock. The approach was discussed by the world's leading experts on deep borehole repositories at a brainstorming meeting in Washington DC on 15 March. The meeting was organised by geochemist Patrick Brady of Sandia National Laboratories and was sponsored by Sandia and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

I'm wary of nuclear power, but in a less than perfect world, this could be a good solution.

When I was in high school (I won't say how long ago), I really thought we'd have nuclear fusion by now.

So did I, but controlled nuclear fusion has proven harder than anyone at the time thought.

Very interesting article, thanks Randall. Smiley

I've sent it along to my geology professor to see if he has any thoughts about this.

It looks like the best one so far. It sounds about as safe as storage is likely to get and you could have many locations around the country so you don't have to transport the waste nearly as much/as far.  Of course, there may be problems I'm not aware of as neither geology or nuclear waste are my fields.

Placing small amount is a large number of locations could reduce the safety and security issues connected with placing large amounts in a small number of locations, but it still runs into the NIMBY obstacle

Or they could use Brown's Gas to nullify the nuclear capacity of the waste, but that would be like, smart.
