IRA supporters in the US were monitored before, I don't think there was any penalty, but they knew who was an IRA supporter.

After 9/11 many were put on no fly lists and dubbed terrorists as well.

They also put known domestic terrorists on those lists.

That's not much of a penalty for killing an Ulster policeman. Or even making a bomb to do so.

From a very quick look, I suspect major parts would be unconstitutional for various reasons.

Well, you are entitled to disagree with the US Supreme Court unless I'm reading the case incorrectly.

Yes that's correct, and there have actually been problems with people boarding planes that coincidently shared a name with people on those lists, (hard to do, considering the fact the names are pretty common in the U.S), however it wasn't until 9/11 that they did that, and their political wing was able to openly come and raise money in the States for ages until shortly after.

The only thing is now, dissident Reupublicans like the R.I.R.A are still on a rampage over here, there was just a bomb last week that left a few in the hospital. You won't find it in many headlines, but you see many sick people from the States all over these online forums supporting them, which is equal with the Al-Qaeda supporters.( in fact many IRA supporters also support  Hamas,  the PLO, and Free Palestine movement. Sinn Féin's president Gerry Adams even supports the Taliban) It would be great if policies like this were able to do something about it, because it really does boggle the mind.

And really, when did patriotism and law-abiding become dirty words?

A common response I get from the US citizens I most commonly speak with (only 5-6, so by no means representative Smiley ) is that they started to tarnish when a significant number of people began to seriously question whether they could reasonably go together (the Patriot Act gets a lot of mentions).

I didn't know that.  It is weird, I just watched a show recently (Deadliest Warrior) were they pitted the IRA against the Taliban to see who would win.  The man that 'represented' the IRA in demonstrating their weapons talked about the IRA.  He kept stating that it was Irish pride and that they were really supported over there.  He almost made it sound like a 'family' thing in that you had to be Irish, born there and with family already in it to be accepted.  No one else was welcome.

Truthfully, until I saw your statement, I didn't even know they were still active.  I remember when I was kid/early teens, seeing stuff on the news about them, but I haven't seen anything in years, so I thought they had were finally stopped or had broken up.  I'm going to assume then, that the stuff that guy said was a lie then, about the Irish people supporting them.

They have had a long history, but the Provisional IRA of the troubles is the latest reference, the terrorist organisation that blew up the country for about 30 years before they disbanded. Anyone could have joined it, there were regiments all over the country, and has been infiltrated by the likes of the F.B.I, and MI5. Their weapons were nothing fancy, the same ones used by Libya, that armed them, and were even weapons from Camp Lejune's armoury that went missing in the 80's that ended up over here.
They were only supported by a small minority of people in Republican areas, and the rest came from threatening and intimating their communities, a technique used by their political wing, Sinn Féin, to get votes. They gained international support from propaganda, much like the show you watched. Most of their victims were civilians, they targeted policeman's families as well. My wife's best friend was killed by them when he was 6, along with his family when their car was blown up driving back from a family holiday in Disney Land.
The PIRA was on America's list of Terrorist organisations, until they "disbanned" for the peace process, however older members carried on under different splinter names (R.I.R.A, C.I.R.A) that are still active. Just last year, the R.I.R.A killed British troops the night before they were to be deployed to Afghanistan. They followed a pizza delivery car, and shot the soldiers, along with the delivery men, when they came out to get it.
