This morning at 8:20 I was awakened by a loud crash. It was my 11-yr-old wolf-shepherd, Major [Furry/Adama], falling down the stairs, onto the landing. He'd been sick all night.

We think he had a heart attack. We couldn't move him. He lay there for 20 minutes and died in our arms as we told him how much we loved him and what a good dog he was.

An offering in your time of grief.

So here I am at my journey's end,

And I seem to have arrived ahead of you my dearest friend.

So I shall lay here by the tree, down by the river,

There to sleep awhile.

And in sleeping I shall dream,

Of soft warm hands that stroked my fur,

and a smiling voice that called me to play.

And in time I shall waken, feeling like a newborn pup,

To discover that you have joined me at last.

And we shall romp in fields where it is never any season other than spring, and never any time other than noon.

But until then, I shall be waiting here for you by the tree, down by the river,
there to sleep awhile.

A thousand of every good thing

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and hugs. Mom and I have slowly returned to a state of "functioning", and have been remembering all the good times with Major (of which there were many). He is irreplaceable, and our lives will never be the same without him. We're grateful that he chose to be with us for 4 years.

We had a beautiful ceremony for him that evening. There were eight of us and we all howled in honor of his penchant for singing with sirens.

Today I will plant a tree next to his grave (pine; he loved pine), and over the next few days or weeks I'll be putting some chairs up there and turning it into a nice sitting area. Our friends have also promised us a dogwood, which will go nearby -- a dogwood to provide shade for the dog. Smiley

An offering in your time of grief.

This is beautiful. Thank you.

I am so sorry. {{everyone at your house}}

You know, I think that you are amazing for being with him as he passed. He knew you were there. He was comforted. He didn't have to do it alone. He was with his pack. So you did the best thing, in my opinion, for him and for yourselves.

He'll be there waiting for you when it's your time to join him. Rest assured.
