Here's a web site that lets you "move" the BP oil spill so that it is centered on your location so you can better see how big it is:

It's now larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island, and still stretches out to cover parts of Mass. and New York. Undecided

I just tried it, and immediately gasped "Oh my god!", it was that startling.

This is our Chernobyl. I fear the gulf will be a dead zone for decades.

Uh, no.

Definitely not, but the impacts will be huge and last for decades.  My husband's family was impacted by the Valdez spill.  My father-in-law had to give up and sell his boat, and still has yet to see a dime of compensation for Exxon's mess.

Damn, at my location, it's going as far west as the Lynchberg area, north to just shy of the Maryland/Deleware border, east to maybe fifty miles in the Atlantic and as far south as twenty miles past the border into North Carolina.

(for referance, I live in southeast Virginia)

Wow, I live a couple hours east from you. Rockbridge Co. For me, it's scraping a bit of West Virginia, missing some of the panhandle and the lower counties and a bit of NOVA, but other than that, the state is being eaten by oil. And the poor Chesapeake Bay!

And this would be the reason why I'm against drilling off the Eastern Shore.  If something like this happens there, not only will the shores of Virginia/Maryland/Deleware be affected, but the Gulf Stream will take it further north.

I think this is the first US drilling or production platform spill since Santa Barbara in about 1969. Pretty good track.

I'm not automatically against offshore drilling, but I do come down on the side of "if you can't stop it if it goes to shit, you don't need to drill there."

However, BP has had three major problems now in the last few years. I think they probably aren't as focused no not have problems as they should be. I wonder if they will pay 100% of the costs of the cleanup for this. no matter how much it takes?
