A Real Joe the Plumber Plugs BP Well

http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/60552

links to the CSM article included.

Having heard all sorts of ideas from various places, I wonder how much manpower was wasted on vetting really bad ideas though. Yeah, the experts don't always have the answer, but the amaturs can waste time of experts shooting down really bad ideas. It's the rare case that this happens, and then only when they find a way around the log jam. Submit to a person who is not involved in the project but is an expert of sorts in the field.

I imagine quite a bit of time was wasted. OTOH, though, it was pretty obvious BP wasn't able to stop it using the ideas from their regular stable of experts. I suspect the answer to this problem could have come from damn near anywhere, though.

Poul's Law applies here I think.

Got that spelling right?  I can't find it in a web search.

BP CEO: Time to scale back Gulf spill cleanup
Meanwhile, efforts to permanently plug gusher delayed

BILOXI, Miss. — BP's new boss says it's time for a "scaleback" in cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Federal officials say there is no way the crude could reach the East Coast. And fishing areas are starting to reopen.

They can scale it back when there's closer to 100% cleanup and ecology repair. I doubt they are even close to that.

Uh, that's not what I got out of the article. It sounds closer that they'll be skimmers that are in areas that don't have surface oil (but were in danger before the hole was capped) and either move them to areas that do have surface oil. And boats that are not needed since you can only have so many boats in a given area, will be let go to return to standby status in other parts of the country; or return to their normal job of fishing.

But then the question becomes "how close?"

I hope they are still testing fish and crustaceans and bivalves a year from now to be certain.  The lack of oil on the surface does not mean a lack of oil in the Gulf.  And the oil-eating bacteria may be taking care of the immediate problem but their oxygen-eating tendency may be creating a backlash.

It's a learning situation.  Shame on BP for creating it, and for the eleven dead and wrecked lives in the aftermath.

But it could have been worse.  I for one am waiting and watching.

Not eating any seafood at the moment.

True. The oil could still be pouring out.
