Now THAT is crazy. I can't fathom how massive it must have been!

Wow.  Now I wonder why that line went extinct.

That's really cool. Hopefully updates on the research will be announced!

Wow.  Now I wonder why that line went extinct.

First guess, some environmental change that cut off its food supply. A whale that size would have needed a lot of food to keep going -- and unlike most large whales it would not be able to just filter food from the water.

I know that one of the theories as to how Megladon became extinct was that many whales adapted to colder water and traveled north.  Maybe Leviathan melvillei couldn't adapt to cold water, either, and went out with Meg?

That's certainly possible.

That's really cool, but where does it say it ate other whales?

Per the CNN article I read on this, the baleen whales that were its prey were much smaller than today's baleen whales...and the evolutionary increase in size may have been a response to precisely this kind of predation. Baleen whales got big so that they'd be too big to get eaten. If this newly discovered "raptorial sperm whale" couldn't adapt in response, that might have helped doom it.

Two very deep follow-up thoughts:

1. I now eagerly await the made-for-Syfy TV movie "Leviathan! Monster of the Deep".
2. Anybody else immediately think of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Giganto (from FF #4)?

Another possible theory.  Heck, it could have been a combination of any number of factors.

1. It couldn't be much worse than Shark Attack 3: Megladon (and yes, this is a real movie.  It stared a pre-Torchwood John Barrowman).
2. No, I'm thinking more of an odd mix between The Bible, Pinoccio, and Moby Dick.

If I remember correctly, wasn't Giganto sort of a cross between a huge whale (body) and a frog (legs)? (I haven't seen the early issues of FF in many years. I also vaguely remember some type of giant whale in one of Kirby's Fourth World comics in the early 1970s.

Or Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (which, while it was shown on Syfy, wasn't actually made for Syfy, I don't think...but it might as well have been). I'll never forget the scene where the mega shark leaps out of the water...a couple of thousand feet to grab a jumbo jet as its next meal. I was howling!

SA3:M wasn't made by Siffy either, but said channel still shows it.

I figure this is inevitable, so I'll start:
