I have this black crystal that is so light in weight that it feels like plastic... I was wondering if it could be Jet?
If someone could explain further the physical properties of Jet, that would be great.

Thanks.

I have never handled jet before, but I think it's suppose to be lightweight and look kind of glassy (someone correct me if I'm wrong).  As far as physical properties, jet is basically fossilized coal.

If it's fossilized coal it sounds as if it would be lightweight. Although, I'm not sure about 'glassy' the piece I have seems quite matte in appearance, but that might be just the way it has been polished.

Jet is fairly lightweight (usually lighter than glass). From the Rocks and Minerals Dictionary: "Jet has a hardness  of 2.5-4 (quite soft) and a specific gravity of 1.30-1.35 (it is relatively lightweight). Jet leaves a brown streak. When burnt with a red-hot needle, jet smells like coal. Black glass and plastics are often used to imitate jet (glass is much heavier and harder than jet) - jet is warm to the touch."

Also, I forgot to mention - it floats, for a while anyway before it slowly sinks.

When you say 'black crystal' do you mean something translucent or transparent? If so I've never seen jet like that and would find it highly suspect. I've seen glassy jet - ie. polished, or matte jet, and it can be easily carved (and was, especially for mourning jewellery). What others have suggested are good tests; also, it will warm to your skin and like amber, it will also sometimes create a bit of static is rubbed with wool.

As people have already said, jet is very light -- much lighter than most people expect it to be the first time they pick a piece up.  That's because it's not actually a rock, but rather the product of wood that decomposed under high pressure.

It can appear shiny if it's highly polished, but I wouldn't describe it as "glassy" usually  If you have a black rock that looks *glassy* and feels reasonably weighty, it is probably black obsidian.

And as Randall mentioned, it generally doesn't feel cold to the touch.  That is, if you left a piece of jet and a piece of something else -- like quartz -- sitting on a shelf together for a while and then touched them both, the quartz would feel quite cool but the jet would not be as cool.  But that isn't so dramatic that the jet actually feels warm.  If that makes any sense.

However, I just tested a piece of jet I have and it does not float.  If your piece floats, I suspect it's plastic or maybe vulcanite, which is a kind of hardened rubber.

I just tested mine also, it does not float... what I said originally was that it sank slowly (due to its lightweight) so sorry for the confusion. It's not transparent, it's completely opaque and it doesn't feel cold to the touch at all, in fact it warms up pretty quickly in my hand. Here is a pic of it at a few different angles:

Yep.  That looks exactly like jet that has been tumbled to polish it.  Mine looks just like that.

I'm as certain as I can be without touching it myself that this is jet.

Yey, lol. Ok well I feel more confident now that I'm not carrying around a piece of plastic! Thank you.
