I thought those were more reserved for the politcal boards, I just made a suggestion for adding some sites which was soundly slapped down.  I respect the decision of the powers that be and as far as I'm concerned it's dropped.  I can have them linked in some of my conservative groups no biggie  Smiley

No one was trying to simply "slap down" your idea; Randall, f'ex, very explicitly explained his reasoning not to include support the troop links in politics, and since it's his board, it's his decision. Further posts were debating liberal and conservative and how those labels apply to the links and groups suggested. (Also, just to let you know, conversation on the subject may well continue in this thread even though you've stepped out; that happens quite often here.)

And debate and discussion is the forum culture, and has been for many years (probably since its inception, I would imagine.) There are some areas where it's less common- the social areas, maybe- but it can be found anywhere. Smiley

I had no idea it would be such a big deal, I have learned my lesson about asking for this kind of stuff here no worries  Smiley

I think you're seeing anger or irritation where it simply isn't.  I don't think Randall was irritated by the question, certainly - Mel looked irritated by "support troops" = "conservative", but that doesn't mean he's mad AT YOU.  It's a pretty common trope, after all.

As far as debate on the subject goes - if you want to bow out, by all means, I don't want to sound like I'm going to duct tape you to the wall. Wink  But most of the people here LIKE debate - I WANT to understand why the ACLU is considered evil or liberal or whatever.  I WANT to understand your viewpoint, as I want you to understand mine.  It's only by communication and actually HAVING these discussions can anything change.  Compromise and understanding comes from HAVING the discussion.

If no one is willing to have the conversation, how can we understand each other and find solutions?

I get that, and I do like debate, unfortunately most of the time I get to play on this site (which I love dearly) I'm at work and have very limited internet, and don't have access to the normal resources that I would.   I'm allergic to making an argument and not being able to back it up as I'm making it Grin. I just don't have the ability to give the time and research that I normally can to politcal arguments (stupid internet blocks at work Sad

Ahhh.  That makes sense perfectly - and I know what you mean about net nannies.  I hate them.

Especially since they often block stuff at random, or stupid things.  Very irritating.

Not having the ability to have the links handy for the arguments is absolutely a good reason to not get into the water with this one.  Saves everyone a lot of headdesking. Cheesy

LOL this site is not blocked though mwahahaha so y'all are stuck with me  Grin

I could look the stuff up when I get home, but usually by then you guys have gotten to a whole nother point and the stuff I'm looking up is irrellevent Smiley.  Plus I like to keep myself honest, double check what I believe that great point that fits perfectly that I heard somewhere or other, can I find it again?  What is the history? is it total bunk? Is it true?  When in that persons history did he say that statement, did his views change?  I put a lot of research into my arguments er discussion points.

But you are also going to find that certain groups (like several the my FIL swears by that are talking heads on FOX) you can't use as experts.  And seriously, The ACLj is exactly what Gorm presents it as.  They aren't even close to the ACLU.

I like fox news, I watch it a lot, but I would never use them as a source unless I could independantly verify the information at least 2 other reputable places, then I would list all three.

I tend to lean more conservative myself. Could also have to do with where I was born and raised.

I wasn't irritated by the question at all.

I don't like seeing the military used as a political football by any side in politics. Unfortunately, that's what many "support the troops" groups do, use supporting the troops to push their choice of political agenda (be it left or right). Meanwhile, groups that provide actual support to the troops without a political agenda and have been doing so for decades (e.g. the USO) are ignored.

I don't like seeing the military used as a political football by any side in politics. Fortunately, that's what many "support the troops" groups do, use supporting the troops to push their choice of political agenda (be it left or right). Meanwhile, groups that provide actual support to the troops without a political agenda and have been doing so for decades (e.g. the USO) are ignored.

It was not my intention to do that in any way/shape/form, looking back at it I can see how I should have worded it differently.

So I've noticed.
This might just be my impression, but it seems that where you're from has a lot to do with which side you favor.
