It has only been in recent years that our conservatives have been trying to emulate the American conservatives, and that is only because our once fringe right wing party succeeded in destroying our conservative party.
Nitpick:  Reform/Alliance didn't destroy the PCs; that came from inside (IMO, mostly Mulroney).  Once that happened, though, they were instrumental in how things got put back together.

On the broader discussion:  I find left/right debate somewhat baffling, period, not just the US sort; that's mostly because 1) the terms have morphed and re-morphed enough times since they came into use that their meanings are fuzzy almost to the point of uselessness, and 2) a single one-dimensional diagram is ludicrously inadequate for mapping the variety of political opinion (I suspect an adequate map would require enough dimensions/axes that it'd be impossible to parse as a single diagram).

Actually I would blame McKay more since he got the leadership of the PC after having a written agreement not to merge, then merged anyway.  It however doesn't matter what they call themselves now.  As long as Harper is in charge (and rules like a king) it will remain the Reform/Alliance party.  It may take a generation or more to undue the damage and shake out the radicals until it becomes a reasonable party again.

Which goes back to the left/right divide.  Even if you did consider yourself left or right, there is probably someone so far out there that makes you look like the opposite.  And they are the loud, obnoxious voice of 'your side'.

That was quite a bit later than what I was talking about, though - <checks Wikipedia> 2003, as compared to 1993.

Yeah, 'cept my point was that the "where on the line between right and left do you fall?" construction just plain doesn't work - the loud and obnoxious people who make me think, "get off my side, you're making me look bad," are seldom those who are farther from the (arbitrary) centre point of the left/right line than I am; the relation between my stances and theirs is usually not describable using the left/right model at all.
