I used to cast all my spells late at night, however, I am trying to fight insomnia by getting up early in the morning and getting to bed before midnight. This is such a basic question and I feel really stupid for asking, but I have never been faced with it before, so I am wondering if I really need to wait for the light of the moon to do my spell work? Would it be just as effective in the afternoon or early in the morning? Or does time of day have a significant effect on spellwork? I should add that doing spellwork earlier in the evening is not an option because my DP is home, and I just do not feel comfortable doing spells in front of him. We live in a studio-like home, so there isn't another room where I could be alone.

Well I've never heard of only being able to cast at night. I've heard of planetary hours where you cast spells based on the associations of the planet ruling that particular hour on that day. Usually it's too complicated for me and I just do whenever and add in a clause like, "Please let this be the correct time for my working." Grin

This depends on your beliefs AND the type of magic you are trying to use. Some examples: If it is folk magic that depends on following the correct procedure, you probably really do need to do it at a certain time. If the magic is Will-based, you only need to if you believe you do.

If being up late is not really an option, early morning is also a powerful magic time, especially the morning twilight.  Sunrise also can really help certain spells.  But there are some deities, like Hecate, that really should be called at night, but again, whether it is an hour before dawn, or eleven at night, I don't believe that it makes that much of a difference as long as it is still dark out.

so I am wondering if I really need to wait for the light of the moon to do my spell work?

Unless you're doing moon-specific work, so to speak, there is no 'magical clause' that states spells can only be done under the light of the moon.

I rarely cast spells, so when I do it's for a very important reason.  Therefore, I will incorporate as many associations appropriate to the situation - colours, scents, time of day, etc., without getting too complicated.  However, if the best time of day turns out to be 3pm, I'm hardly going to call in sick at work, so I'll end up doing the spell at the best time for me.  But, like Nimue said, sometimes you have no choice in the time, like when working with Hecate.

I think the bottom-line is that your spell is going to be most effective when you feel the most comfortable and are able to focus, and if that means doing the spell in the middle of the afternoon, then so be it.

In general I think not. As others have mentioned, some people get uber specific about what hours correspond to what planets/archangels/saints/deities/whatever, so by their logic the morning or afternoon might even be better, depending on what you were trying to get done! Personally I've cast spells in broad daylight with no ill effect.

Hey,

in my experience, all these correspondences, whether time of day, colour, incense, flowers, etc. are nice to get you in tune with what you are doing, but they are not particularly necessary.

An example: If you're casting a healing spell and need something that helps you focus, you could use blue candles, lavender flowers and so on and cast it in those restful hours in the early evening. But if you don't need some burning-glass equivalent, there is no one who would try to force you Wink

And don't worry, there are many reasons why magic succeeds or does not succeed, and not all of them are in your power Smiley
