A puzzling pattern in the cosmic rays bombarding Earth from space has been discovered by an experiment buried deep under the ice of Antarctica.

FRom what I've heard it is more of a continuation of the pattern seen in the northern hemisphere which is why most bets seem to be on a supernova remnant as the cause of the too many cosmic rays. Of course, that still leaves "too few" area to be explained.

I don't remember the details, but I seem to remember a study of ocean sediments indicating evidence that the earth has taken a significant hit from a super nova in the past couple hundred million years

I don't remember the details, but I seem to remember a study of ocean sediments indicating evidence that the earth has taken a significant hit from a super nova in the past couple hundred million years

There probably was a nearby supernova about 3-5 million years ago that created the "Local Bubble" -- the area the sun is in that is almost free of interstellar gas (1000 times less dense than normal).

I found the original article, and it looks like the data fits; but we probably won't be able to confirm it until we get a probe a lot more sophisticated than Voyager out there to measure the isotopes
