I don't know if you guys have been following this, but the thinly veiled religious intolerance masquerading as hallowed patriotism--ratcheted up by election-year right-wing grandstanding--is making me crazy. Sarah Palin freaking weighed in on this (if the term "weighed in" can be used for such an intellectual lightweight), and shockingly the Anti-Defamation League followed suit. The latest:

Landmarks Commission Votes Down Preserving Site Of Proposed Mosque

(in other words, opponents of the mosque tried to get the existing building landmarked to prevent the mosque from being built; they lost, unanimously)

Landmarks Commission Votes Down Preserving Site Of Proposed Mosque

I'm glad to hear this. I don't get the anti-mosque side at all. Haven't they ever heard of "freedom of religion"? So what if the Imam behind it said Osama bin Laden was built in the US. Various fundie Christian preachers with big buildings and TV networks blamed it on Americans too -- the Pagans and the gays and the evolutionists, etc. Freedom of speech is another First Amendment thing.

I was reading an editorial piece about it...It was basically saying that you shouldn't have a Muslim mosque near a place attacked by Muslims.

All I could think was that I bet the person complaning wouldn't have any problem with a Church being built near the site of an abortion clinic bombing or a place where the KKK would rally.

Because Muslimosity is what breeds terrorists, not religious extremism. Didn't you hear that's how the world works now?

Let me see if I can find that piece I read a day or so ago about this mosque. I think Nate Silver did it, but I'll have to go look.

Say they had granted landmaked status to the building 45 Park Place.  Next year they want to put the mosque at 50 Park Place, what happens? You will run out of buildings that can be granted landmarked status.

Ah. Here we go.

After reading that the opposition based on "Ground Zero" makes even less sense. It's 4 blocks away. There's already a mosque in that area.

You mean they didn't "refudiate" the mosque?  Silly people, following the law instead of bowing to the will of xenophobes.

I wish it *was* visible from Ground Zero. That would be as it should be...because it would repudiate the blanket condemnation of Islam that the mosque's opponents are trying to impose in connection with 9/11, and it would stand as a testament of reconciliation.

And it would serve as a reminder the Muslims in the towers died on 9/11 too.

True--esp. since there was absolutely no architectural basis to landmark this building in the first place.

(Love the maze image, BTW)

Phase the next.

Frivolous Filing: TV Preacher’s Legal Group Sues To Block Islamic Center In New York City

Yesterday, New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to allow construction of an Islamic center in lower Manhattan. Immediately after the vote, TV preacher Pat Robertson’s American Center for Law and Justice announced that it would file suit to block the move.

When I saw the words "TV Preacher's Legal Group" how did I know it would be Robertson?  Great, now I know the next story the local news media would grab and be flogging its corpse weeks from now.

I think that's the part that is so anger-inducing (for me) about this. There is a church at Wounded Knee. There's a convent at Dachau. There are churches at pretty much every historic battlefield in the U.S. and Europe. It's the same double standard that has the Muslim soldier/shooter at Ft. Hood labeled a terrorist but the man who flew his plane into a federal building labeled a tax protestor. Or the guy who shot Dr. Tiller labeled a pro-life activist.
