Are you ready for a world without antibiotics?

Antibiotics are a bedrock of modern medicine. But in the very near future, we're going to have to learn to live without them once again. And it's going to get nasty

reading the bit about pneumonia, I work in a nursing home, we have patients that get pneumonia four or five times a year, not including the aspiration pneumonia that usually precedes the realisation that the patient can no longer swallow properly.

This is not exactly new to me. There were articles, for example, about multi-resistant pestilence bacteria in more than one place of the world in German media for years. So I/we had some time to get used to the thought of dying in a way our parents wouldn't have dreamt of…

Yeah. I know there's been quite a bit of this in the news in recent years. Totally not surprised. Undecided

None of this surprises me, frankly. In the last 15 years, and during my 8 yr. stint working in the medical field, I saw a disgusting amount of over-prescribing anti-biotics. It was like, "well, such and such is the newest and most potent. Let's prescribe this for EVERYTHING!" And they did. And as a result, the medications no longer work because, like all life forms, viruses and bacteria mutates in order to survive. The sad thing is that doctors are taught almost nothing about natural medicine and instead and given monetary kickbacks from endorsing and recommending pharmaceuticals. I have no doubt that antibiotics were, and should still be, a very potent form of healing. Though, it doesn't look like that's going to be the case and we'll be going back to naturopathic medicines and we'll have to like it.

Antibiotics haven't worked for me for quite some time. I have drug resistant, chronic UTIs that used to respond to antibiotics and no longer do. Now, it's all about the natural remedies. And it's working FAR better than anything ever given to me by a doctor.

It's funny, because antibiotics have always worked wonders for me when I'm really ill. However, I've been on generic Bactrim for almost a year now to combat acne, and though I'm being weened off it over the next few months, I wonder how many superbugs have been left in the wake of my desire to have a face that doesn't look like a pepperoni pizza.

Actually, it scares the crap outta me. That said, this really isn't "new". . .there are a ton of virus and what not out there just waiting. . . and if that's not bad enough we, as humans are creating more (biological warfare). Sick.
