Grumble, grumble.

comedy central should not be able to get higher priority on a given "public" network for it's streaming video than any other streaming video.  yet streaming video probably should be higher priority than file transfers or e-mail, and dedicated streaming video users should be paying more than folks who only want lower priority services.

which then raises the question of "general" users such as most of us. we use a little bit of everything, rather than a lot of a service that could benifit from higher priority (ie video conference) or save us money by letting us accepting a lower priority since we mostly do file transfers that can accept a bit of delay in individual packets.

Then charge by quantity of usage.  as long as the rates and levels are reasonable, that's not something I'd have a problem with.  It would work the same as all other sorts of charge by usage things.

I only object to that sort of thing when I get throttled even though I'm paying.  THAT pisses me off.  If it's in the contract and not the super-fine print to start with .. *shrug* that seems reasonable.

I'm thinking type of usage.

Home users should pay for pure speed & total thruput normally. Such as 20 MPS & 10GB a month. Pay more, get more of each, with each user and type of packet same priority. And, yes, it should be a simple contract.

You want your video conference packets to have priority, pay for a commercial account that offers complex bells and whistles. You want to be cheap but move a lot of data, pay for a high GB, low priority commercial account.

And I'd be okay with that.  Heck, it would be nice to be able to set some things to *low* priority - not everything needs to be high!

I just don't want it to be that if you don't pay for high priority, you get crap.
