I wouldn't recommend Incredimail.

One mailclient that I really appreciated, even though it isn't free, is The Bat ( http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/download.php )
It could handle large loads, sorted it excellently, was able to open folders with about 10.000 emails easily. (OE broke on 1000) The templates also worked excellently for generating messages. And this was about 10 years ago.

I abandoned it mainly because it wasn't free, I didn't need the power and didn't feel to upgrade. However, I share your frustrations on Thunderbird and its new version (it doesn't feel friendlier), so if The Bat has moved with times (mainly in visual effects, it felt a bit rough at times) I might reconsider.

I find it amazing that there are so very few nice mail clients.
