But my problem is what to DO with the beads, not so much how to make them.  That is, whether to link a specific prayer to a specific bead, so when I get to that bead I say that prayer.  Or just use the beads to keep my hands busy during meditation.  Or...?

Prayer beads like rosaries are typically used as a counting tool for repetitive prayers.

That's what I thought.  Although I don't know much more than that.  There are specific sets of prayers associated with rosary beads, correct?

Yep.  Here's an example:

I think that sometimes people will use a bigger spacer bead to separate different types of prayer.

Just wanted to bump this thread in case you've made any progress on the prayer bead project, MI. Smiley

For my last flamekeeping shift (on Sept. 26), I actually sat down and made a set of prayer beads and matching bracelet, but haven't actually used them in any way, yet. They just look pretty. Wink So I'd love to hear if you've done anything of late with developing prayers or meditations or anything with yours...

Regarding the Catholic rosary: simply, there are "decades" of ten beads (on each of which you say a Hail Mary prayer) divided by a larger bead (on which you say an Our Father prayer) - there are five decades around the whole of the rosary. As you recite the prayers, you're supposed to meditation on a set of "Mysteries," which are a collection of events from the Gospels. So, for instance, the "Joyful Mysteries" focus on events like the annunciation (when God got Mary pregnant), the nativity, and other events mentioned from Jesus' childhood. The "Sorrowful Mysteries" involve events during the last few days of Jesus' life, the various betrayals and tortures he suffered, etc. Each set of Mysteries has five events total, and you contemplate or meditate on one for each decade while repeating the Hail Mary prayer like a mantra, basically.

I was raised Catholic. So... I have all this miscellaneous information in my brain. Wink

I wish.  But not really.  Undecided

I've gotten the gorgeous aquamarine beads I was hoping for.  And I've worked out in my head the general concept.  But I haven't written or beaded anything yet.

Believe me, I'll probably post pics when I do finish it because I'll be so happy to be finished.  Cheesy
