I know. What does he think that this is going to prove, apart from the fact that he is a much bigger tosser than most?! Because of course this is going to resolve all religious conflicts.... I really hate these people!

And I wonder what he would think if a group of Muslims burned a bunch of Bibles on Easter Sunday.  A part of this is that Sept. 11 isn't just the anniversary of the terrorist attacks but the end of Ramadan as well.  Although I doubt he would've known that when he planned this.

All I can say is that I hope the Islamic world sees that the vast majority of Americans (as the polls suggest) think this is a horrible idea.

Not that I agree in the least with what this moron is doing, but just how is this stepping on the freedom of religion of Muslims?

Unless he is stealing their personal copy of the Koran to burn, I have to agree with LF.

I will start by saying that I am absolutely disgusted by this as I am with the other Anti-Islam sentiment that seem to be on the rise.

US church to go ahead with Sept. 11 Quran burning

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A Christian minister vowed Tuesday to go ahead with plans to burn copies of the Quran to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks despite warnings from the White House and the top U.S. general in Afghanistan that doing so would endanger American troops overseas.

Uh, did he get his fire permit? Last week the local FD turned down the outdoor burn request on safety grounds.

I don't know if he did or not, but IIRC he's said they're going ahead with it regardless of the permit.

I don't think buying copies of the Quran and burning them steps on anyone's freedom of religion. I think it is a really dumb and very rude idea, but it is definitely protected speech in the US (just like burning the US flag is -- another dumb and rude idea) -- and should be. Freedom of Speech is meaningless if one is only free to speak in a way that no one finds offensive.

Thank You Randall.   I've been trying to work my thoughts around  to cover Freedom of Speach.

I simply keep getting my brain hung up on the idea that this uproar is  certainly giving the Koran a whole lot More weight than ANY other book in the world !    Which will keep feeding into the extremist view that is even More sacred than ever.  I might be able to accept if the book had been hand written by their God... then that One original might be holy and sacred.  But these copies were printed by mortal men and can be had for not much money.  Millions and millions of Copies. They are books...plain and simple.

While i think it is a Stoopid thing for that "preacher" to do... a part of me is concerned that if the entire world caves to the will  extremists... , it could be similar to " permitting an elephant to inch into one's tent " !   (  Personal opinion only ..and all that )

Well they way I see it, the  Muslims  or anyone for that matter  have the freedom to  practice their religion without  prosecution, I would think that burning their  Holy Book would  be encroaching  on their  Freedom to  practice their  religion. The Quaran is printed as a Holy Book for that  religion as the  Bible is printed as a Holy  book  for Christians etc, to  me burning  anyone's Holy Book is  stepping on  that  religion's  freedom  to  have those  copies available  for  others to buy and use  as a holy book.   ( I have a  weird  brain and sometimes i just see things  from  a whole different angle than  everyone else  Grin)

Far as I have read  NO  he  did not get  a permit  for the bon fire  but he's gonna  go ahead and  do it anyway, hopefully the fire  department  will go and fine  him  for  having a bonfire without a permit. Ahhh now I"m gonna  go and try to find that article  there was  more  in it about  the  whole  Freedom  of Speech protecting  him on the burning the  books but  not  protecting him  if he gets a fine  for not having a permit.....

Side note: burning the flag is mandated in the Federal Flag code for flags that are too wrecked to fly.

That's the origin of the protest.

I heard on the news that he may get in trouble because it's illegal to burn books in that jurisdiction.  I think the Gainsville Fire Department spokesperson said it had to do with the ink and if it was plain paper it wouldn't be much of a problem.

Well, no, not really. This is a church of 50 or so people. The world has over 1 billion Muslims. I don't see some jackass pastor's bonfire impacting really any Muslims. Might piss them off; but it doesn't curtail their beliefs or practice of beliefs. It really doesn't impact their religious freedom at all.

Well, I'm sorry, but I just don't see where burning a book someone *might* buy is in anyway keeping Muslims from practicing their religion. I can't even stretch that argument to fit. Sorry.

If a burn ban was instituted for everyone, that's one thing. If it's aimed at his constitutional right of free speech, then that's going to get tossed.

OTOH, we're talking Florida here, and it's hurricane season. With any luck his little party will get rained out.
