I can't even believe this is newsworthy. It's bad enough that it is happening, but this kind of thing would happen regardless. Paying attention to it makes it even worse.    Angry

This could be the first domino to fall in a series of bad events that really didn't have to happen...

Technically it's the second domino. It's being done in protest of the Cordoba House Mosque (aka Ground Zero Mosque). The folks behind the mosque don't want to "respect the feelings of a majority of American's and the survivors / victim's families". Hence the folks in FL won't respect the Quran.

That's exactly what the First Amendment is there for, to protect minority positions and minority religions. It's not their fault a bunch of pundits are lying to the American public about the location of the mosque (it isn't at "ground zero" -- its two long Manhattan blocks away). The preacher in Florida has every right to burn copies of the Quran (its protected free speech) and they have everyu right to build a mosque -- no matter how much the majority objects.  The whole point of the First Amendment is to prevent the majority from limiting speech and religion to that which the majority approves.

If the vocal majority had their way on religion in the US, there would not be any non-Christian religious buildings or the like in this country at all. And if the really vocal part of that majority had their way, only certain Christian churches would exist as well.

Fla. minister cancels burning of Qurans on 9/11

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The leader of a small Florida church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy says he is canceling plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.

(hardly surprising, but glad the idiot made that call)

Maybe having the entire government and military and FBI etc of the country calling you an idiot helped.

Maybe. Or, he got enough attention and it wasn't worth carrying through anymore--or he never intended to, to start with. Cynical, me? Yep.

Apparently he's been assured the NYC community center will be moved.

Funny, that's not what the Iman is saying, but I suspect that's the next storm coming out of this.

Of course it will, since the media indicates he simply wanted to "speak" with the man in charge of the community center.

Ugh.

Now you know someone has reached rock bottom when Sarah "I can see Russia from my house" Palin thinks they're an idiot.

I can't find the article again, so take the details with some salt unless somebody else's google-fu is better than mine.

The person who bought and paid for 51 Park St has said he is looking at selling the site for about 4 times what he paid for it unless the other organizers of the Cordoba House can raise enough money & get moving on the deal. He is in it just for the profit, apparently he's not looking for full market value if it's going to be a mosque / community center, but he does want a profit. Apparently the organizers don't have their act together, yet it's not a problem from the protesters.

Why can't they just build a Taco Bell and offend everybody instead. That way we're all on the same foot (with turning stomachs).

On a more serious note, I believe the guy should have the legal right to burn any book he wants, for whatever reason he wants, as long as he is not torturing someone in the process or forcing others to do so.

That said, I don't think the national media should have picked up on this. This was a perfect local story for that area in Florida, and had it gone to court, up the ranks to the federal level, then I could see why it would be covered. As is, it was a controversial story that had been developed to market on the latest hype stirred by the mosque incident, in addition to islamaphobia in general. This was a bad idea, because all we need are international news organizations such as BBC, Al Jazeera, Sky news, etc, to pick up on this, and have coverage of the event as it would have unfolded.

I'd argue the idea to air this story was probably as bad as the idea for papers to put all their articles online for free, while still hoping to make a profit from their print editions. A lot of lives could have potentially been lost from this.

I'm not one to usually call for the news to censor itself. Most of the time I say they do it too much. The backlash from this would have not been worth it, since this incident wouldn't have done anything to change the fact 9/11 happened, or that part of America hates that a mosque would be built by ground zero. However, some nut trying to manipulate the media into tricking the government into following his demands (by a minister nonetheless!) scares me more than the story itself.

From what I saw tonight, Donald Trump made an offer and it was turned down. Not sure what exactly it amounted to, though.

Frankly I hope they DON'T give into all this pressure. This is so ridiculous.
