Ah NaNoRebeling....I already have a half page of mine typed up Wink

I've been a NaNoRebel a couple of times, working on a piece I'd already started, mainly because I tend to have Ideas that Stick Around for Too Long and Block Out Everything Else.

This is the same reason I'm rebelling.  I just want it out of my head for now.

Plan ahead.  You can't start writing until November 1, but you can do some planning and preparation before that.  You don't have to have everything outlined to the last detail, but have some sort of idea where you're going before you get to November 1.  Make sure it's a big enough idea for a novel, but if you plan on finishing it in November don't let it get too big.  50K is not actually a lot of words.

During November, I highly recommend setting daily goals and sticking to them.  (1,667 words per day will put you at 50K at the end of the month, but I usually shoot for 2,000 per day to give myself a little padding because I know that there will be days when I don't have the time to write 1,667 words.)  I also found it useful to schedule writing time--even if that just meant that each day I thought about what I had going on the next day and said, "OK, this is when I write tomorrow."  Rewards for reaching milestones (5K, 10K, 25K, etc.) can be useful, as can giving yourself a reward (even if it's just a gold star!) for each day you successfully reach your goal.

The hardest bit for me is:  DO NOT EDIT.  Just write, even if it sucks.  Just get it on paper.  (Or, well, on the computer.)  You can edit later.  And you may find on a reread that it doesn't suck as much as you think, anyway.

If you do finish your first draft and "win"...  In previous years, CreateSpace has offered winners a free proof copy of their book.  I highly recommend doing this.  It's so cool to hold your own work as a bound book, and it's handy for later editing as well.  (Somehow the bound book feels different, when editing, even than pages printed on your home printer.  I found it easier to get a little distance like that.)  Which brings up the next point:  Do not expect a finished novel from this.  You've got a first draft, yay, but there's still a lot of work to do before it's "done".  Wink

All that said, I'm not participating this year.  I've got too much else going on right now.  I wish everyone luck, though!

Thanks for sharing all that advice, Star.  That makes this seem doable!  I was thinking about writing this year, but I don't think I'll have enough time.  Two trips away from home, my birthday, and a holiday.  Definitely next year though!  Smiley

For those of you who don't know, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual event where writers attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November.

http://www.nanowrimo.org/

Who's participating this year?  What are you doing?

I think I'll try to give it a go, but I've got mock exams starting towards the end of November so I'll need time to revise. If I can strike a balance between revision and Nano, then great!

Oh yeah, the Ideas that Won't Go Away problem.  I'm having that now with something that is totally unrelated to my planned NaNo.  Every time I sit down to work on NaNo outlines and character sketches, the other story tries to eat my brain. Roll Eyes

I've got two at the moment (one a dystopia the other about a rock band who encounter paranormal-related mysteries) along with my planned NaNo and the other dozen or so parts of its convoluted back story.

Who's participating this year?  What are you doing?

I may be participating, and rebelling by working on last year's project. Yeah! It's been sitting in my head all year, stewing and getting bigger and more elaborate, and I've finally decided on the most important thing of all: how to begin it. It's a story about a young girl named Georgiana and her odyssey in an alternate dimension, where she becomes a handmaiden to a royal and later an unwilling spy, and then a bunch of other things happen and by the end of the book there's a really annoying cliff-hanger that gets your guts boiling! Yaaay!

Anyway. I hope it works this time around.

I thought I had escaped it this year, but of course every time I sit down to work on my outline or characters, I get ideas for my original non-NaNo novel, and just today a TV script idea emerged in my head (it's a little bit Firefly, a little bit Dollhouse, a lot of fun to procrastinate and think about!)

FWIW, I was kidding about the dragons.  The band's preferred method of transportation involves Bigfoot and assorted flavored lubricants.

OMG.  Now, I am afraid of what you could do with 30 nights of "literary abandon".

I went all rouge yesterday and started a Nano Novel, but I basically wrote about a sandwich (panini, yum).  Probably not good, but heck it was 100 words.  Or maybe it was a 100 word run-on sentence. Idk.  I really should try to work on my Gothic-style lesbian vampire story...but I kinda gave up on that when I stopped reading Anne Rice.

Lesbian Vampires and flavored lube...Mel, don't we make a pair? Tongue

I'm participating this year. I tried last year and didn't finish, but it was pretty fun so I thought I'd try again. This year I have a two-month-old so...well. We'll see how that goes!

The story so far is shaping up to be a YA historical fiction. Maybe with paranormal elements, maybe not.
