So, I have a Frigidaire top-loading washing machine. I don't know the model number because we got it at a tag sale and honestly, I don't know where to look for all of that. So, the machine ended up getting screwed up yesterday when I tried to wash two pillows: One of the pillows bounced up at some point and got caught on something on the other side of the drum. Well, I went downstairs to smoke and freaked the hell out. It's been sitting quietly and unplugged since yesterday morning.

Today, I went downstairs and put it on a test (nothing in it) spin cycle. There wasn't much issue but I also didn't leave it on for a full spin cycle. So, I threw in a small blanket and let it go to town. The entire washing cycle (wash/agitate and rinse) was fine. However, once the spin cycle started, I noticed the fantastic burning smell equated with overheating vacuum cleaners. It wasn't as prevalent as it was yesterday, but it's still worrisome. All of the online do-it-yourself websites only have information on it not doing a spin cycle and a rubber burning smell: neither of which are my problem.

So, any do it yourself-ers out there that have had washing machine issues even remotely similar to mine?

Sounds like a belt might have burned out - my brother did that once, and the entire utility room filled up with thick white smoke.

I'll make the Hubby look when he gets home from work. I hope that's all it is.

I'm with Shadow - sounds like a belt.  And the belt is probably still working (or you wouldn't get movement of the tub) but maybe left residue on something.  It would still be good to replace the belt, but wouldn't be an issue in the short run.  Now if you get an electrical burning smell......!!!!!!
