I agree that it is their business, and can play what they want. However if they had been playing this station when I first inquired about working there, I would have passed. It really isn't part of my intention to file any sort of action, I'm just trying to find a precedent to see if my thoughts are too far out of line.
I have not told them up front that I'm not a Christian. This is a small, small community - I am trying to avoid having people in my business. However, would everyone (Christian or no) be ok with being part of their silent ministry? I feel by virtue of my being there while they are playing this music with the intent that it be part of some ministry, I become part of it too. I don't want that. I actually don't see why I should need to discuss my religion with them, I have been clear that I am not comfortable with this music, asked for a compromise and was shot down.
But for an example of how another situation I was uncomfortable in was handled see part of my reply to Mandrina. I'll add that when I mentioned that situation, the owners laughed it off.
I've known a lot of small business owners that do this and to tell you the truth ... you won't be able to get them to stop by asking or even by telling them why. In fact that would make it worse probably. I realize I'm making a blanket statement here so I will say all the Christians in my family, their church, etc. would not. It's one of those things like ... if they know someone is a Christian and plays Christian music in their store, business, whatever they will spend their money there first because "We are supporting fellow Christians and they are even trying to minister to the public. You never know what God will use to reach someone!" I can't tell you the times I've heard this ... and then been dragged to that store. It's my experience that anyone that plays that music in their business is looking for a chance to minister to someone. In a way, they play the music in order to bring God up. They let the customer do it but then they stand around for 30 mins talking about God. The attitude is ... if you don't like don't come in here. As for employees, same goes for you. I really don't think you could do anything legally either although I'm not entirely sure as I'm not an attorney. But I would think that you would be forced to tell them your beliefs in order to use that to leave and set up your own business or even work in that field until your two years was up. I am small town person too. Born and bred. If you tell them you should be prepared for everyone to know and be ready to defend yourself. I don't know where you live but I'm in the Bible Belt and things can get heated when God comes up. Especially if you are a 'devil worshiper'. I understand your reluctance because I know I'm no where near to telling my family or community! If ever. I really, really hate to be a downer like this, but I don't know if you have any other option other than to suck it up unless you want to work in another field for awhile.
