Hey, folks, something I didn't realize: There's a total lunar eclipse the night before the solstice, after midnight in the U.S., Eastern time (i.e., in the pre-dawn hours of the morning of Dec. 21). Then we've got the solstice the following night (the night of Dec. 21/22).

I can't remember the last time the winter solstice and the full moon coincided (almost), let alone with a total lunar eclipse thrown in. Pretty nifty...though those of us determined to experience both are going to be really sleep deprived by dawn on Dec. 22.

(AND I just found out that my company holiday party is in the evening of Dec. 21. Never fear, I'll start the "Up All Night" thread well before then, and I should end up with some party photos to post to the thread to boost our energy later on. It'll be a fun two nights, but OH, will I be a mess on the 22nd!)

For anyone in NYC, here's something else to consider for the night before our "Up All Night" celebration:

http://www.amnh.org/calendar/event/Winter-Solstice-Telescope-Party/

I'm going for sure!

Altair, I thought you'd like to know that I just referred (when posting the new Cill schedule and mentioning our solstice Group Keeping) to this year's edition of the celebration as "Up All Night:  A Technopagan Winter Solstice v3.0" - it just sort of tripped off my technopagan fingers naturally and without much thought, but it seems fitting to me to make use of the code-version format.

Thanks! My fiance is an art director and so has a great eye; he took nearly all the photos with a new kickass digital camera he bought just before the trip.

Make that a third "yay," since I'm taking the 22nd off as well. I'm gonna need it!

My boss was kind enough to give me the 22nd off too, so I'll be frequenting here.  Cheesy

There is a chance I may go somewhere else to see the lunar eclipse though. That depends if its cloudy in my area or not.

It looks like nothing is going to be popping up in the job market I'm looking into until after the holidays (which will probably be just as hard, lovely!), so I'm completely free for the entire Yule season. Tongue

Fingers crossed on your job hunt, Rin. (My significant other is among the long-term unemployed at the moment, so I hear you). But I'm happy at least to take advantage of your present freedom to have you participate in our all-night revels.

D'oh!  I can't count!

Well, I can, but apparently I can't do it two ways at the same time without mixing the two.  This will be Up All Night's third anniversary - three years since the first one - but the fourth time we've done it, so it's v4.0 Embarrassed.

Hey, everybody,

I think it may actually have become a tradition: the annual "Up All Night: A Technopagan Winter Solstice" celebration here at the Cauldron! With Randall's blessing (thanks, Randall, for giving us a home), it's time to start planning ahead for this cyberfest's 2010 edition.

..................................

And whose up for it this year? As last year, the solstice falls midweek, which will make it tough for some to make the all-night commitment (unless they plan to call in sick to work the next day, like me!)...but note that everyone is welcome, even those who don't plan to stay up all night. (Those of us in it for the long haul are eager for as many folks to distract us from our pillows as we can get!)

So mark the evening beginning at sunset on Tuesday, December 21, on your calendars. Here's further info on the astronomical event (from http://www.chiff.com/home_life/holiday/winter-solstice.htm):

I might be able to manage staying up for part of it.  I couldn't take the 21st off, so I'll have to see about taking a nap after lunch that day.  But I still can't join you lot for the whole time, because I'm visiting the in-laws again and I have to be at the airport by 6 a.m. Of all the times not to have a laptop....
