Pope: Condoms to stop AIDS may be OK in some cases
In new book, pontiff opens door on previously taboo subject

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has opened the door on the previously taboo subject of condoms as a way to fight HIV, saying male prostitutes who use condoms may be beginning to act responsibly. It's a stunning comment for a pontiff who has blamed condoms for making the AIDS crisis worse.

This was my understanding of the previous pope's position, that while good Catholic sex was supposed to be "only" for procreation, something had to be done about the AIDS epidemic, and condoms are the only real way to prevent it.

Abstinence, education, and good healthcare standards don't hurt either (but these aren't always possible in the third world, though).

Still, I never would have thought that Ratzinger would say that condoms are okay under ANY circumstance let alone stopping AIDS.

I guess I always wondered what a married couple was supposed to do, if one of them got aids after they were married?  Especially if it were a no-fault contraction of the disease, like blood transfusion.

Perhaps messages from his God do occasionally get through?

In the article it states: "Benedict said that condoms are not a moral solution to stopping AIDS. But he said in some cases, such as for male prostitutes, their use could represent a first step in assuming moral responsibility "in the intention of reducing the risk of infection." "

What if you are not a male prostitute, and wish to assume moral responsibility, with "the intention of reducing the risk of infection"? Would the use of a condom be allowed?

Pope: Condoms to stop AIDS may be OK in some cases

Interesting. It'll be interesting to see how this is parsed and spun by all parties, incl. the Vatican itself.
