*sigh*

I understand that parents are worried about their children but, as I've said in other threads, when I weigh the benefit of vaccines against the negatives I stand firmly on the pro-vaccine side.

Especially since so many of the "cons" for vaxing are just that - a con.  It's a lot of people running scared over the monster under the bed. *sigh*

As an aside, does it seem to anyone else that the people most likely to be against vaccinations are typically too young to remember what it was like before these vaccines made most of these diseases rare occurrences?  My parents lived through the times when they closed the swimming pools because of polio, and when they lined up kids in rooms of iron lungs.  My mom's cousin actually contracted polio and his legs were seriously damaged.  We got every single vaccine on time.

A more telling question would be, are the grandparents of the kids who are not getting vacinated to young to remember. Most of the older board members at best would know an older relative or friend's relative who got such a disease.

I suspect I might be the bottom edge of that age range: I'm 35, and was born when my parents were 39 (my mother) and 44 (my father) in 31 and 36 respectively.

My father had back to back mumps and whooping cough (got well enough from the first to go out in public, was diagnosed with the other within two days) that left him with lifelong health issues (liver, in particular) - he got them in what would have been something like 1938-1940. The mumps vaccine came to the US in 69, apparently, and whooping cough in the 1940s, though he was in England. (He also had measles and chicken pox in there somewhere, but that was less dire for him.)

I don't know that I've linked this here at all recently, but my favorite (erm, if one can have such a thing) discussion of why we immunise is at Making Light, written by Jim Macdonald, who besides being a widely read author is also a wilderness EMT deeply interested in all kinds of health issues: http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010978.html . It's heavy on the personal story side of why vaccines do good things for individuals and communities.

I had mumps and measles as a kid before the shots were available. I'd have rather had the vaccines, thank you. My parents had friends whose families were affected by polio. Etc.

*nods* one of my mom's colleagues had polio as a child.  Uses a walker, etc.

I don't care how small the risk is, it's a lot smaller if you get the damn shots.

My mom gave my sister and I a very vivid retellling of a polio summer.  This was after my sister said she wasn't going to vaccinate.  She still didn't, I continued to do so.  Personally, the people I know with polio are all patients, but that's cause I'm a nurse and my parents were lucky.

My husband is 50, he had mumps and measles as a child as well.  He was in Long Island at the time.  I'm 44, I was born in texas and moved to illinois when I was 2, and I got both vaccinations.

I was lucky and didn't catch anything before the vaccinations came out - except chicken pox, but as I was 4 it was not an issue.  I remember when we went down as a family and got the brand new polio vaccine on sugar cubes.  My children are fully vaccinated, but I will say that part of my decision was based on the fact that everyone on both sides had been vaccinated and no one had had a reaction.  Though they haven't been vaccinated for chicken pox, but since they're both in their 20's that came out too late (they both had it when young).
