I always wondered - does your ability to do magic improve or deteriorate with age?

I think I am more skilled and have more knowledge, but I think my actual innate abilities were better when I was younger. I think I was healthier and I was able to summon more energy.

Thoughts?

Mm. I think I'm getting better with age, if only because practice makes perfect. I might have had more energy when I was younger, but I was also waaaay less focused. And you know... kinda stupid.  Tongue

I figure most things get better with age.

As for energy...  I felt it way more when I started, and it felt too much for me.  The way I see it, I'm still drawing up the same energy, but I'm used to it now.

I think for different people it would be different...

I've always found our magic ability to be dependant on how often we practice and use it... however, children are known for having a natrual ability and skill at working with magic and being intouch with magicaly creatures...

I really suspect it is a personal thing... where one person gets better and becomes more used to their abilities, another will start feeling more warn out and less intune...

Carame - could you please remember to use the quote function?  It helps preserve a link in the thread, and shows who's responding to whom.  Thank you!

This varies by individual, I think. I know what you're talking about: the ebbing of that youthful, outward driven vigour can make it feel like some abilites have faded as well.

I checked your profile; I'm about five years older than you. When I was about the age you are now, I noticed a definite dip in my own ability to pull up huge amounts of energy. I felt so different in my body and mind that it took me a while to just get used to myself in my new life stage.  This "oh my gods, what's happened to me?" phase did pass, though. Now I feel stronger than I did ten years ago, because of years of practice and better control. I might not be shooting lightning bolts out of my teeth, but I can access energy much more easily and direct it a lot better.

Those childhood abilities deserve their own category, I think. A lot of people have them, but they often disappear or change with puberty. Kids' brains are very different from adult brains.

I think to a degree, we socialize it out of them. For example, we are "supposed" to discourage imaginary friends and eventually as adults worry that such things are a sign of being a tad whack.

I never did that with my daughter. I haven't asked lately, but her friend may still be around.

OTOH, I also agree that their brains are wired differently as well.

N, you took the words right out of my mouth - that was exactly what I was going to post on reading the OP! then I got to your post, and you've said it for me!

Seriously, I find myself agreeing with you often enough that it's becoming a little creepy. Are you in my head, or am I in yours?  Tongue

Well, I am more skilled in what I do practice now, but I was more open to trying different things back then.  I dabbled into all sorts of things as a teenager, and have become a "specialist" of sorts now.   I eventually had to focus on a few things in order to develop them.  The rest of the stuff I did, kind of atrophied.  For instance, as a child I was much, much better at psychometry.  I used to rub my fingers down multiple choice tests and "Feel" the right answers.  I still can do stuff like that, and pick up vibrations from objects, etc. but I was better at it then.  Now I work more with healing energies and when I can focus (ie not too stressed to think) I can really pull up some energy.  You have to realize tho, I am not relying on MY energy which is nonexistent LOL but am tapping into Higher levels/Divine/Universe instead.  I have learned to become way more powerful with visualization/meditation techniques, but like I said, I had to specialize.

If you're still young, your magic could definitely come back up, although physical health will have an impact if you significantly ill or out of shape.  Numerology cycles and also Pluto transits could help give you an idea of what to expect when.  Also North Node transits can help time this (in Vedic astrology, Rahu is the demon associated with witchcraft and powerful magic).

It depends what direction you decide to go with it, too.  You may need to move in a totally different direction to experience a new learning curve.  So, if you do primarily candle magic, for example, you may need to move in the direction of ceremonial magic (something totally different).

I'm kinda the opposite - find I'm more open to experimentation now than when I was younger. When I was young I thought there had to be One Right Way to do things and I just had to figure out what it was. These days I'm like, "well, we'll see if this works."

I think that there will be a certain point when it peaks, depending on how mentally active you are, especially once you get past 60. If you keep you're mind up, then you'll get better and better, but if not, then I'm almost certain your abilities will go down.

That bring me to another question that I guess is slightly related. Are smarter people better at magic? What I mean is, if someone of average intelligence and a genius can focus their minds in the same relative amounts, will the genius's magic be more effective?
