Hours before their special news conference today, the cat is out of the bag: NASA has discovered a completely new life form that doesn’t share the biological building blocks of anything currently living in planet Earth. This changes everything.

Possibly indicating a second biogenesis event on our planet. Yeah, it's pretty much the coolest thing ever.

While I agree about how cool it is, it looks like Wired is being excessively speculative - it sounds like their article was written before the press conference, so they may not have had a lot of detail to work with... but all the more reason, IMO, not to make too many leaps.  The microorganism isn't a whole separate evolutionary line, it's just a variation that's really adapted to an arsenic-heavy environment - it doesn't even sound like they've demonstrated definitely that it always uses arsenic in place of phosphorus, just that when the scientists removed all the phosphorus, the microorganism was able to use arsenic instead.  See the articles from NASA Science News (the horse's mouth, pretty much) and Universe Today, which give a lot more info about just what the scientists did and how.

Again, the news hype surrounding this is stretching the facts very thin. I'm not sure if this is because of the way NASA announced this or if it is simply reporters not fully understanding what they are reporting.

Again, the news hype surrounding this is stretching the facts very thin. I'm not sure if this is because of the way NASA announced this or if it is simply reporters not fully understanding what they are reporting.
News sites, especially mainstream ones, frequently don't play nicely with my browser, so I haven't been looking at those much, but from what I can tell, deficiencies of reporter comprehension are definitely a factor - that, and the MSM's need to sensationalize everything.  It's all over the place on the astronomy-and-space feeds I get, though, so I don't need no steenkin' mainstream media (and neither do you, 'cause I'm all over this thread with science-site linkage Cheesy).  It's a sensation there, too, but not because it's spun; it's ubercool all on its own.

Here's another, even more detailed article in Astrobiology Magazine.  Written, delightfully, for the interested layperson, who has or is acquiring a good bio knowledge base.
