So I had asked Hermes for some luck and such with my finances.  I told him that I would come up with an awesome sacrifice and gift for him, but so far I am completely at a loss as to what I should do.  And he has helped me, even more than I thought he would, so I really need to come up with something awesome.

Any ideas?

Old texts mention sacrifices of olive oil, honey, and violets. Theoi.com has some stuff about it ... I think in the cults section? But check there.

Also... just sit and try and think of what he wants. I offer wine, sometimes, or pastries from the local shop (not the shitty kind from like, Food Lion, but from the hippy places that do more natural stuff).  I also offer dates and figs. And incense!

Nothing particularly spectacular.  Only idea I have is to make a point of leaving pennies and maybe nickels behind in the spare change buckets at cash registers.  The kind where you leave change for the next person who needs it.  Maybe for a month.

He likes sweet stuff, IME -- sweetened coffee seemes to go over very well.  Since you asked for financial help, I'd suggest donating some of that money to a cause relevant to him.  He's guides souls to the land of the dead, so a donation to a hospice would be a nice idea.  Also, something like Doctors Without Borders -- he's the god of crossing borders to help, and those doctors who travel to extremely dangerous places would fall under his protection.

Hermes, as far as the Greek deities go, is a pretty easy going guy.  In my experience with him, he loves things that you would have fun with too.  Since you promised him something "awesome" I would suggest something a bit out of the ordinary.  Perhaps a day trip to a casino (travel and gambling both in his domain).  Or even a small trip shopping to a store that is further than you usually go.  To honor him, I go to either the Mall of America (which is about an hour away for me) or I spend a few dollars on lottery tickets (being not much of a gambler myself).  Wine also is a good offering, and he does loves sweets.

Ooh, fun stuff could also be pranks on folks you know... who would appreciate them! As long as they're non-hurtful, non-humiliating ones. Make someone laugh for a day.

Do something that benefits the homeless. They are his people.

... So they are.  Which lobs a lightbulb at me (the "I can't believe I didn't put it together before; it's so obvious when you know" kind) about themes in my thematic pantheon.  Thankee!

I'm coming from a Roman background here, but still... How good are you with crafts? If you're good at it, you could always make an image of Him and set up a shrine. Then you could do some work He would appreciate (several suggestions have already been made by others) and decorate the image or shrine with something brought from that service or place where you performed it: an object from the bar where you performed amateur stand-up comedy in His honour, rocks picked up near the homeless centre you volunteered for or a wreath fashioned from branches of nearby trees.

Just a few thoughts.
