The new Anthony Hopkins horror movie The Rite opens soon (I'm salivating, as I love that kind of flick), and in anticipation, the real-life exorcist on whom the film is based was interviewed.

Here's the juicy bit, where he claims instances of demonic influence are increasing, and explains why:

Quote
Sometimes people ask, "Why now?" And I say, because now there are more Catholics who are involved in paganism and idolatry, so there are a lot of people who are opening a lot of doors to the diabolical.

The occult is all about power. Now the occult is not synonymous with the Satanic, but it is a doorway.

There are also more and more Catholics, and people in general, now in this country who are involved in New Age things. With the opening of doorways to the New Age and the occult, you do not know what is behind that door; you do not know what you are tapping into most of the time.

[snip]

But what is becoming very rampant is that more and more people are involved in pagan idolatry. Some of it is structured and formal, and some of it is not....

Beware, pagans; beware!

Hoo-boy. I always just thought those dark entities and dreams were a part of my religion! (Said in my best down homiest, southern, rootin'-tootin' voice.) /sarcasm

I appreciate his point-of-view and in some instances, I could agree. However, having no statistical data on the correspondences between "New Age" practices and demonic appearances, I can give no elaborate answer.

ROTFL!!

A few months ago we found a book in a used book store.  About the size of a paperback but hardcover.  The cover was wild designs in bright pink and black - very late 60's early 70's.  It had the whole catholic exorcism rite in it.  We, of course, had to buy it and give it to a friend who would appreciate it.  (where's my devil emoticon?)

From the interview:

"This is coupled with issues that have to do with sexual abuse; 80% of the people who come to me have been sexually abused. That is a soul wound, and a doorway for a demon."

Hoshit, Buddhist meditation causes demonic possession O.O Does that mean the Dalai Lama is possessed by the Demon Llama?

...

His few good points are so cock-eyed they are barely worth mentioning -.-

I know! We expect paganism to get branded as demonically perilous, but Buddhist meditation? Really??

My first thoughts on this were:  Wow, it's sad that this wackjob is dissing my religion.

My second thoughts surprised me:  Wow, it's sad that the only representative the Church has of a real exorcist is a wackjob.  There's some scary shit in the 'verse that we don't understand.  What if exorcisms are sometimes necessary, and Catholics who need them have nowhere to go except for a priest who will just blame the victim?

Just random thoughts from a random ex-Catholic.

Wow, that quote about the sexual abuse relation really offends me.    Angry

It reminds me of when I was younger, when I actually did worry about being hurt and persecuted by demons. That was years before I had the flash backs of being sexually abused as a child.

It was so branded during the 1960s by some priests and ministers.

Actually, Transcendental Meditation has been on the fundie watch-list since the 70's, IIRC.
