Maman Brigette is a Voodoo lwa, syncretised with Saint Brigid. I was wondering whether anyone had any experience with with Brigid in this capacity or just other peoples insight, I thought it was quite interesting. Smiley

Here's some info on her: (from http://www.rootswithoutend.org/racine125/goddess.html)

Quote
Maman Brigitte, surprisingly enough for a lwa of a primarily African tradition, is British in origin, descended from Brigid/St. Brigit, the Celtic "triple goddess" of poetry, smithcraft, and healing. She must have come to Haiti in the hearts of deported Scottish and Irish indentured servants. There is even a song we sing in ceremonies which goes "Maman Brigitte, li soti nan anglete", Maman Brigitte, she comes from England...'.

I think the connection is tenuous at best. Maman Brigitte's associations, lore, her whole character, are very different from those of the Celtic Brighid. Also, this page linked is far from a scholarly source, so I'd take any connection made there with a truckload or two of salt.

I don't have any firsthand knowledge of Maman Brigitte, but the link is a little hard for me to see. Their personalities, from what I understand, along with their associations, seem rather wildly divergent. The only thing they seem to have in common is fire, but Brighid's fire is healing, inspirational, transformative; it is the fire of civilization, the controlled fire that enriches human life. Maman Brigitte's seems to be a wildfire, a fire that burns for the sake of burning- it is as likely to engulf and consume you entirely than to warm and assist you.

Of course, as I said I've had no interaction with Maman Brigitte, and I've never worked with Saint Brigid, either, so I could be way off the mark!

Yes, they don't have much in common- I find it hard to imagine 'our' Brigid anointing her genitals with chillis.  Grin

Even so, I thought it an interesting tidbit to think about, how a god associated with Brigid could be so radically different and how people took her name to suit their needs.

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on this. The way she is viewed within voodoo or voodoo-related systems differs, and not everyone accepts that they are the same (or rather, two faces of the same god). As I don't have any personal relationship with Maman Brigette (but do, sort of, with Bride), I don't think my comment will mean much here. It would be like me trying to talk about someone I only know of through second-(or third-)hand information, rather than personally knowing them; how do I know if what I hear is true? She might talk to me completely different than she'll talk to someone else.
