I'd like to make a portable shrine to Mercury, aka Hermes, as I see Them as the same god. It's a good way to easily carry some tools to worship a deity, but in His case it's even more appropriate given His role as a god of travellers. However, besides the basics (small image, box, etc.), I'm a bit low on ideas right now, which is why I wanted to ask you if you have a portable shrine to Mercury/Hermes and what it looks like. Photos would be nice and suggestions are most welcome  Grin

I'm sorry this is so short, but consider using a pair of dice.

Other items you could include in a shrine to Hermes/Mercury: shepherd's pipes, strawberries, lyre, a tortoise shell, a caduceus.

Nice one! Hadn't thought of that, but it's a good idea. Thank you!

All good suggestions for which I am thankful, but I have one doubt: strawberries?

BTW, does any one know of good websites that sell Hellenic jewelry, statues et al? I used to have a list from a website dedicated to Dionysos, but it appears to have gone offline.

I found a few charms/pendants on Amazon and Ebay. Specifically for Hermes and Mercury.

Try coins, too. Foreign, if you can get them... since they're from other parts. Er. Obviously. Har!

According to one account Hermes was believed toi have been nourished under a wild strawberry-tree. According to Pausanias, the remains of the strawberry tree was kept at temple of Hermes Promakhos.

Love it! Will be both a good inaugural offering and decorative element to be drawn on the box.

Total UPG inspiration and connected to pop culture, but that reminds me of Firefly where they give passage to Shepherd Book because he has strawberries along with his little money. And I can definitely see some connections between Hermes and the crew of Serenity.

Anyway. Don't mind me. I'm silly. *backs slowly out of the thread*

Hi, I'm curious is he was eating the fruit of Arbutus unedo, because strawberries don't grow on trees? That would be really neat history for the Strawberry Tree, which seems to be resigned to landscaping where I live!

I suspect a poor translation at one point or another.
