I recently bought a Kindle (Tax return ftw!) I love the reader but there's a definite lack of material. I've looked over ancient texts and project Guttenber for PD books but (as we all know) the problem with some of them is that they're fairly old. I don't mind paying for digital books (as long as they don't cost as much as their physical counter parts) but it's pretty difficult to find some of them for these readers.

Anyone have some good recommendations?

Science fiction & fantasy - Baen.com / webscriptions.net  no DRM, about $6 a book, books are released in full e-book format at the same time hard cover comes out.  books are released in chunks starting 2 or 3 months before hardcover if you a minor junkie of an author. for major junkies there are e-ARCs for about $15 released 6 to 8 months BEFORE hard cover. there are also numerous free books on the site. if you are not sure about a book, the 1st third or so is up for free, but I don't think you can download just that third.

what genre's are you looking for?

I was looking for a pdf tonight and noticed this. It's not the book that I noticed, but the kindle capability. I'm sure you could find a few good books on there.   Smiley

The pdf reader on the Kindle is very good, so mostly anything in that format is readable.

Smashwords (http://www.smashwords.com/) is a self-publishing site with hundreds of free titles and even more very cheap ones, if you don't mind unknown authors.

The Suvudu Free Library (http://www.suvudu.com/freelibrary/) offers 50-page previews of new books every Friday, and you can buy the full monty from them if you like them, plus complete short stories.

For freebies, it's worth sifting through this VERY long post: http://www.bachelorsdegreeonline.com/blog/2009/get-almost-any-book-for-free-100-kosher-sites-offering-great-literature-for-download/

Well, I believe Amazon sells a lot of books that have digital copy/e-reader options now. I think Lulu does the same, if the author agrees to it (since it's self-publishing and all). There are a couple of books I've been looking at on Lulu that sell digital copies for really cheap, and I'm tempted because I'm on such a tight budget atm, and don't want to spend a lot of money. Buuut I really love having the PHYSICAL copy of the book in my hands! Cheesy
